Sousa tips Williams for the top

Swansea boss Paulo Sousa is not surprised to see central defender Ashley Williams being linked with a move to the Premier League.

Williams: Highly regarded
Williams: Highly regarded

Former Stockport man Williams captained Wales for the first time against Scotland on Saturday and was also named Wales' Player of the Year last week.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Wigan to join up with former Swansea boss Roberto Martinez and Sousa believes the influential centre-half would be at home in the top flight.

"I don't have any doubts about clubs watching him." Sousa told BBC Sport. "He can play in the Premier League, of course, as I recognise other players in the Premier League are not better than him."

Williams recently signed a new contract at the Liberty Stadium and although Sousa is eager to keep the influential centre-half, he insists he would not stand in the player's way if he wanted to leave.

He added: "I think of the player first. If these things happen and it is good for him and then I'll be very happy for him."
