The 34-year-old centre-half was believed to be a target for Leicester and had the opportunity to join former club Bradford, but opted instead to sign a two-year deal with the Tykes.

Barnsley boss Simon Davey told the club's official website: "We have been looking to increase competition at the back and have brought in a player with a proven pedigree."

"Darren has won promotion four times from the Championship during his career and we are delighted to have persuaded him to join despite interest from a lot of other clubs."
