Derby County midfielder Stephen Pearson could join Birmingham City on loan initially before completing a permanent switch.
The Scotland international appeared set to link up with Blues in a £600,000 deal last week after agreeing personal terms.
However, his medical showed up a tear in his groin and prompted Birmingham to back out of the original deal.
Rams boss Paul Jewell believes Pearson's move could go through, with Blues firstly taking the player on loan.
"There is a small injury and they're not sure about his medical, so it might be a loan situation the last I heard," said Jewell in the Birmingham Mail.
"Stephen wants it to happen, and Alex (McLeish) wants it to happen.
"So as far as I'm concerned, it will happen. It's in limbo at the moment, but things are ongoing."
