Rams boss preparing loan swoops

Derby County manager Paul Jewell hopes his latest foray into the loan market bears fruit as he looks to freshen up the Rams' squad.

The Rams, hit by injuries and suspension, beat Leeds on Tuesday night to reach the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup for the first time since 1990.

After the 2-1 victory at Pride Park, Jewell revealed he has irons in the fire.

He said: "I am trying to get a couple of players in on loan. I am waiting for a call as we are a bit thin on the ground."

Jewell would not identify which positions he is looking to strengthen but one seems certain to be a centre-half as both Martin Albrechtsen and Dean Leacock are out injured.

They missed the Leeds game with calf and groin problems respectively and are rated very doubtful to face Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship on Saturday.

Jewell also has injury worries over strikers Rob Hulse and Emanuel Villa.

"Martin has had a scan and we don't think the injury is quite as bad as we thought. Dean is still sore and we are waiting on the results of more tests," said Jewell. "Tito (Villa) has had a kick on the calf and Rob has his rib problem. We are nursing both along."
