Sunderland boss Roy Keane was handed a first competitive return to Nottingham Forest in Wednesday's draw for the Carling Cup second round.

Keane took the Black Cats to Forest last month in a pre-season friendly and would accept a repeat of the 1-0 scoreline in that match.

Premier League teams not involved in Europe were put into the draw after Wednesday's first-round matches with several being handed potentially awkward ties to be played later this month.

Newcastle will be away to Coventry, Hull go to Swansea and Middlesbrough must tackle League One Yeovil at home.

Elsewhere Stoke travel to Cheltenham, Hartlepool host West Brom, Macclesfield have a trip to West Ham and Manchester City - who qualified for the UEFA Cup due to their disciplinary record but are not exempt from second-round duties - face a long trip to Brighton.

Blackburn will be at home to Grimsby, Wigan will welcome Notts County and Fulham host Leicester. Bolton have a home tie against Northampton.

The matches will be played in the week commencing August 25 except Manchester City, due to their European commitments.

Carling Cup second round draw:

Blackburn v Grimsby; Bolton v Northampton; Brighton v Man City; Burnley v Oldham; Cardiff v MK Dons; Cheltenham v Stoke; Coventry v Newcastle; Crewe v Bristol City; Fulham v Leicester; Leeds v Crystal Palace; Hartlepool v West Brom; Huddersfield v Sheff Utd; Ipswich v Colchester; Middlesbrough v Yeovil; Nottm For v Sunderland; Preston v Derby; QPR v Carlisle; Reading v Luton; Rotherham v Wolves; Southampton v Birmingham; Swansea v Hull; Watford v Darlington; West Ham v Macclesfield; Wigan v Notts Co.
