Hammers appeal annoys FA chief

Lord Triesman has criticised West Ham for appealing against an independent tribunal which ruled against them over the Carlos Tevez affair.

A Premier League arbitration panel found West Ham guilty of breaking league rules over the transfers of Tevez and Javier Mascherano in April 2007.

The league fined the Hammers £5.5million but decided not to deduct points, and the club went on to escape relegation at Sheffield United's expense.

Tevez played a major role in West Ham's miraculous end-of-season form which saved them; a turn of events that infuriated Sheffield United.

The Blades have continued their battle against West Ham and an independent FA tribunal ruled in their favour earlier this week, which means the London club could be liable to pay as much as £30million compensation.

However, the Hammers have reacted by confirming they are planning to appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.

But FA chairman Triesman is not happy that West Ham are to appeal the latest ruling.

"If it is going to go through the courts it is going to drag on, and on, and on," he told Sky Sports News.

"I never cease to be amazed about the ability of lawyers to argue about these things and that is peoples' right of course - but I think it would be much simpler for people to observe the rules of football.

"The FA is a pretty decent regulatory body and there is no reason why a very big club shouldn't feel that it should regard those rules too."

"As far as I'm concerned there's a lot wrong with the idea of someone being 'worth' £20 - £30 million pounds, and the fact that someone else 'owns' them, makes it even more wrong. But then football is corrupt and full of greedy people! I also think players and the vile Warnock should be ashamed for trying to get compensation. Let's face it, the Sheff Utd players that were premiership quality found another premiership club, and probably did so whilst getting a big pay hike. The ones that went down, and stayed down were not good enough for the premier league. The same applies to the players at my team Charlton. There are two culprits here - the previous West Ham owners for breaking the rules, and the FA for not giving out an appropriate punishment (points deduction) and instead pocketing the money arising from their own incompetance. Sheff Utd, Watford and Charlton fans wrongly paid the price for the corruption and incompetance, but if West Ham are fined £30 million and subsequently get relegated after selling their best players, then it will be West Ham supporter's turn to suffer! The FA and the previous owners of West Ham get off scott free!! Football is going down the toilet"

"ajewhu.. take a look at my earlier posting, the reason we went down was because we were not good enough over the season. I accept that, but the point i was making was that your posting ignored the fact about what WHU did after the fine, that is where the FA/PL got it wrong and that is what all this dispute is about. "

"I've got a very funny feeling this man is just on the defensive, after all who did give West Ham United the permission to play the player?

They failed."

"Shouldn't Sheffield be taking action against the FA rather than West Ham? It was the FA who decided not to dock WHU points and fined them. West Ham did the wrong thing, admitted to it, accepted the punishment and moved on. If the FA had of given a harsher punishment the none of this would have dragged on. Whether they deserved a harsher punishment or not is not for me to say. But they accepted their punishment - what were WH meant to do? Say that the punishment wasn't harsh enough and relegate themselves? Yes, they broke the rules nut these punishments being mentioned are completely ridiculous for what they did. Besides the fact that the club now has new owners also."

"Can someone for once consider the season we MAY have had if these 2 South American wonder kids didnt turn up at all? How about taking that into account? Without them we MAY have stayed in the UEFA cup, without them other members of the squad would have played more and the atmosphere MAY have been better. Everyone keeps going on about what WOULD have happened had Tevez not been there, well, if thats the argument, why not consider the entire season, not just the last 10 games? IRONBLADE, how about blaming the FA for not being clearer? They accepted West Ham's deal at the time, they should have been more clear on the requirements. Face it, you were going down anyway, live with it, you are where you should be..... so are we."

"deedas - Yes, we weren't good enough to stay up. But your statement is completely naive! Without Tevez YOU would have been relegated, so I don't see how we 'got ourselves' relegated!!

It's not even about that, since this started for many Blades fans it's about the principle of the whole situation and in honesty, I don't care if we get nothing. It's about what happened and the lies. It's also about how the smaller clubs get treated, it could be a very significant case in modern football history."

ironblade (Sheffield United fan)

"ajewhu.. You miss the point totally, yes the fine probably was sufficient at that time. It was what then occured, in the fact that your club again deceived the PL by stating that the ownership issue was sorted, when clearly it was not, and the player then went on to continue playing out the season. You only have to look at how long it took Man Utd to "sign" the player to realise that the 3rd party ownership issue was not & probably still isn't sorted. Can you answer the question that who is Tevez on loan from, is it WHU? or Kia Joorabchian with MSI? If the issue was sorted why dont you call him back from his loan spell to replace the injured crocks you have for strikers? "

deedas (West Ham United fan)

"Vader does have a point,if we had observed the rules we wouldn't have got into this mess, but we've been fined already and Sheffield got themselves relegated,so why should we be willing to fork out that amount of cash to a team who dont deserve it.Maybe the FA should give them the 5.5 million fine we paid them and then relegate them for poncing"

ajewhu (West Ham United fan)

"By the way, the foresic accountants would take months if not years to determine the true cost to sheff utd and their cheapskate chairman. If the actual gain in coming into the prem is 30m, by the time you up salaries, bring in overpaid foreigners and low rated Brits on extortinate salaries, pay tax etc, the actual figure is likely to be nearer 5-7m. There is the posibility that (if like West Ham did a few years back), moving down a league allowed us to lower our debt. In this case I think sheff u will OWE WEST HAM a few million."
