Lawrence losing Spurs fitness race

Stoke midfielder Liam Lawrence has admitted he is unlikely to be fit for next Sunday's crunch clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

Lawrence injured his ankle after tripping over his pet dog last month and underwent further scans on Thursday to discover the full extent of the injury.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "It's a matter of working hard with the physio but it's taking it's time to heal.

"I'm trying to be ready for Spurs but that's not looking likely because I'm still struggling to walk.

"It's doing my head in to be honest.

"I just want to be back training and back in contention for a place in the team because we need to be picking up points."

The Premier League newcomers have taken just four points from their opening seven Premier League games, but Lawrence said he and the rest of the squad are in a positive frame of mind.

"We're still confident because we haven't got turned over by anyone," he said. "We're working hard with the manager because the game against Tottenham is massive and we need to get something from it."
