Collins not scared of competition

Danny Collins admits he will welcome any new signings to the Stadium of Light, but will not give up his place in the side without a fight.

Sunderland boss Roy Keane has already announced that he is looking to bring in five or six quality signings during the close season.

And Collins along with the rest of the squad will be keeping a close eye on the comings and goings over the next few months.

The defender had an outstanding season at left-back but he knows that no-one is irreplaceable.

He told The Chronicle: "It will be an interesting summer, there's no doubt about that.

"I'm sure the manager will be bringing in some new players to strengthen the squad and that can only be good for the club.

"Of course, it can also be a nerve-wracking time because the new players that come in could be competing for your place in the side.

"But that is part and parcel of football and it should bring the best out in people.

"I'm a centre-back but I've enjoyed playing at left-back this season and I certainly am not afraid of competition.

"I'll be away over the summer but I'll still be keeping an eye on who is coming and going."

"If Collins is going to be replaced it has to be with someone very, very good. With Prem experience and a lot of quality because Collins has been fantastic."
