The England international, 27, has been tipped to leave the Madejski Stadium this summer following the Royals' relegation from the Premier League.

Redknapp told Pompey News: "Nicky Shorey is a player I like. He's a good player and a good footballer.

"We're looking for players who would give us something a bit different and he would do that. He would give us something different to Hermann Hreidarsson. Having said that, Hermann did a fantastic job for us and was brilliant for me.

"But we are going to need a squad and we are going to need cover. We are going to be playing more games than ever next season and it's going to be a lot tougher for us."

Redknapp has already raided Reading to bring winger Glen Little to Fratton Park.

"Hermann Hreidarsson was solid all last season and should be kept for his FA Cup victory parade dance alone !!!!. I guess we need to add to the squad with the UEFA cup games next season, so Shorey would be a good buy, plus from his point of view he probably wouldn't need to move house !!!. Play Up Pompey."
