Hull manager Phil Brown admits he may have to pursue other targets if a deal cannot be concluded for Marc-Antoine Fortune in the next two days.
The Nancy striker has agreed terms with the Tigers and the clubs have settled on a fee but the player is yet to commit.
Fortune, who impressed on loan at West Brom last season, was thought to be edging towards Hull after also receiving interest from Celtic, but West Ham are now thought to be in the reckoning.
Brown said: "It hasn't moved forward in the last 48 hours.
"He has an offer from us and an offer from Celtic and someone has said something about West Ham.
"That is news to us but if so, so be it. We are now in a three-horse race as opposed to a two-horse race.
"We are confident we are still in the pole position but these things are always a concern when they are not done and dusted.
"If there is not a decision in the next 24 or 48 hours we are going to have to move on to other players."
Hull are also hoping to secure a club-record deal for Manchester United forward Fraizer Campbell following his return from the European Under-21 Championships in Sweden.
Campbell, a favourite at all Hull after a successful loan in 2007-08, has also been linked with Sunderland.
Brown added: "We have been in constant contact with Manchester United, Fraizer and his father, and hopefully we can now sit down and draft a deal before he goes on his family holiday."
Hull have also expressed their interest in signing England striker Michael Owen, who is out of contract at Newcastle on Wednesday.
Brown has had no contact with the 29-year-old or his representatives but is now keen to initiate talks.
He said: "It would be remiss of me to say we have spoken to anyone with regard to Michael, he has had a contract to honour.
"But once July 1 comes along hopefully that will change."

"i'd much rather we put our efforts into siginng Owen, at least he's god a good track record in the premiership, maybe not so much lately though, but still, he's quality, this bloke im not so convinced."

"I never saw this guy at an actual game just on the tv but from what I have seen he is quite ordinary. Surely we need to be giving a chance to some of our own youngsters rather than paying over the odds for scond and even 3rd rate over seas players. "

"An excellent hold up player and good technique but not an out & out goalscorer, as much as I liked him with us £3.5m is £2m higher than the fee we had pre-arranged with Nancy!"

"Tevezthegreat you fool! Fortune might just be the key to cracking the top 4 and over taking Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea and establishing a new order in the london footy scene!"

"Fortune, Campbell and Owen... wonder what odds you'd get on none of the three joining Hull. Owen is guaranteed not to go there, I'm sure he'd be happier joining the likes of Everton/Liverpool on pay as you play deals rather than a big contract with Hull. Fortune and Campbell are possible but I reckon Campbell will be waiting for a bigger club to come in and Fortune would surely choose West Ham over Hull, while Celtic although in a far inferior league can offer European football. Gudjohnsen to West Ham sounds a good move. I can't see him at Everton and while he may make a good replacement for Barry at Villa he'd surely choose West Ham ahead of them, and they'd be likely to play him in a more advanced role too. Why didn't West Ham snap up Di Michele on a permanent deal? He looked the part, can only assume his age was the deal breaker."

"As a Celtic fan, I don't want him either. 3 Goals this season and they want £3.5m for him, out of the question. The money can and should be used elsewhere to strengthen our squad, let Hull have him. They seem happy to pay over the odds for underachieving (Campbell) or high risk players i.e. Owen, who in my opinion is the most over rated english player of all time."

"tevez, sorry mate, can't see him being that clear cut in him choosing you over Everton & Villa surely? Regardless of the connection at West Ham."

"He did not excite me too much when i saw him play for West Brom. Would be dissapointment if we pursued this over gudjohnsson who wouls surely choose us over Villa and Everton. The Zola factor and chance to move back to London would surely swing for us.3.5 million spent on Gudjohnsson please, not this guy"
