The 22-year-old, who turns 23 on Monday, missed the second half of last season with a fracture to the base of his spine but is now ready for the challenge of top-flight football.

"Obviously it was very frustrating but I couldn't carry on as it was painful just walking let alone playing," he told the club's official website. "I suppose it's a bit annoying to be fit again now that the season is over but at least I can ease myself back into training without trying to do too much too soon.

"While I've been injured I have given Wayne my support and I think he's done really well. But he knows that I'll be challenging him for the jersey once the new season begins."

Physio Alan Peacham added: "Carl has been in this week for us to check him over. He's done some running and handling and has done well.

"There is no reason why he can't be ready to join in full training when the lads return at the beginning of July."
