Colchester caretaker manager Kit Symons could not contain his delight after seeing his side triumph 4-3 against Tranmere.
Following Geraint Williams' departure last week Symons was put in temporary charge of the U's and this win - which came courtesy of goals from David Perkins, Mark Yeates, Clive Platt and Johnnie Jackson - could go some way to securing him the job on a permanent basis.
"It's not a game I will forget in a hurry," commented Symons.
"It was quite an eventful night and the scoreline does not tell the story. It was an outstanding performance by us and I am delighted to get the win.
"Some of our defending was excellent but there were also some scary moments. But everyone was top draw and I am really, really pleased. We had to lift the players in what has been a very difficult week and they responded really well."
