Hartlepool manager Danny Wilson is delighted with the attitude and fitness of his players following their return to pre-season training.
Pools host Colchester in their League One opener on August 9 and Wilson is hoping his side can capitalise on the Us' relegation hangover to secure a winning start to the new campaign.
Wilson told the club's official website: "I have been very pleased with their effort - the first day of training is always testing, it is never easy.
"There is no use in testing them in three weeks' time, the first day gives you an indication whether or not the players have kept to the programme over the summer.
"And, without a doubt, to a man they have stuck to it and that is very pleasing. They are all hungry to get going but we know it will be a tough season for them - as it will for every team but hopefully it will also be a fruitful one."
