The Tigers were invited to play for the Bortolotti Trophy by Atalanta and Richard Garcia's brace saw them twice came from behind to force a 2-2 draw that sent the game to penalties.

However Bernard Mendy, Andy Dawson and George Boateng all missed their penalties, with only Craig Fagan scoring for City. Tony Warner did save one of Atalanta's spot-kicks, but it was not enough for the visitors.

Hull: Warner; Mendy, Mouyokolo, Sonko, Cooper; Garcia, Boateng, Marney, Atkinson; Geovanni (Fagan 73), Venegoor of Hesselink (Featherstone 60).
