The 34-year-old was a priority target for manager John Sheridan, who is keen to have an experienced core within his squad next season.

Veteran keeper Mark Crossley has also signed, and Liddell was happy to join him after concluding negotiations on Friday.

He told Latics World: "I'm glad to sign up again because I like playing for John and his staff and I enjoy being at the club.

"Once I knew they wanted to keep me it took about five minutes to sort the contract out.

"There's an excellent group of young players here and the club's future looks good."
