Schofield focused on short term

John Schofield insists he is not viewing his current spell in charge at Cheltenham as a chance to prove his credentials for the full-time job.

The Robins assistant is overseeing matters while Martin Allen is on gardening leave, with the club's board refusing to put a timescale on when they will reach a verdict on his long-term future as they investigate an alleged nightclub incident.

Schofield guided Cheltenham to a draw at Port Vale last weekend and is now preparing for Saturday's home test against Crewe.

But he told thisisgloucestershire.co.uk: "I don't feel I am staking my claims. That's never crossed my mind and it is not the driving force behind what we are trying to do.

"We are trying to get results and we have been entrusted with the club being in safe hands until the situation with the gaffer is resolved.

"At the end of the period, however long that may be, my job will be to say 'here is your football club' and I can't make any more decisions after that. There will then either be a decision for me to make or no decision to make. It is a massively difficult situation for us, but my job is football and that's all I like to talk about."
