Allen: Red card kickstarted us

Cheltenham manager Martin Allen admitted his side only started to perform against Millwall on Saturday after they were reduced to 10 men.

The Robins were defeated 2-0 at the New Den courtesy of a Gary Alexander penalty and Dave Martin's long-range strike.

But they had opportunities to take the lead after Barry Hayles was dismissed in the 27th minute for an alleged elbow on Paul Robinson.

Allen said: "Strange though it may seem, when we went down to 10 men we actually got better.

"I think it was uphill the way we played for the first 30 minutes, as I thought we were distinctly average. However we managed to keep them out, started getting back into the game and hit a post after the sending off."
