No case for defence from Penney

Darlington manager Dave Penney bemoaned the defensive performance of his side after they went down to a 3-1 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Cherries took advantage of a costly mistake after 15 minutes to go ahead, when captain Steve Foster saw a back pass intercepted by Bournemouth striker Jeff Goulding.

Darlington keeper Simon Brown made an outstanding block to deny Goulding but the rebound fell into the path of Marvin Bartley who made no mistake from 10 yards.

Liam Hatch headed a leveller for the Quakers after 35 minutes but two minutes later, Alan White was guilty of a poor pass deep in his own half and Cherries' Sammy Igoe drilled a shot goalwards, which was deflected into his own net by Neil Austin.

"A couple of mistakes in defence cost us dearly and we need to be much tighter. We gave Bournemouth two soft goals," said Penney.
