We know how to do it - Wilson

Defender Mark Wilson insists Celtic's pre-season victory in Porto can help them get an elusive away win in the Champions League at Villarreal.

The Scottish champions travel to Spain on Monday looking to get their European campaign back on track following a goalless draw with Aalborg at Parkhead in their Group E opener.

The unfancied Danish club spoiled Gordon Strachan's record of having won all six home group games in the last two seasons, leaving the Glasgow giants probably having to win on their travels for the first time at this stage of the competition to qualify for the last 16 for the third season in succession.

Celtic ended their summer tour of Portugal on a high as Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink grabbed a late winner in a fiery match against Porto in July and Wilson is confident that it could have a positive bearing against Villarreal.

"It's going to be difficult because it's a difficult group we are in," said the former Dundee United defender, who starred in Celtic's 3-2 win over Aberdeen on Saturday.

"I think everybody thought Aalborg were going to be easy to roll over but you won't roll over any teams in the Champions League.

"The boys knew that when the draw was made. When you are playing in the Champions League, teams are full of quality.

"But we can maybe pick up something away from home this season. In previous seasons it's been difficult for us but Porto in pre-season was very much like a Champions League game away from home, even though it was a friendly."

Wilson insists defeat against Villarreal would not effectively end their bid to make the knockout stages again.

He added: "We have been a bit unfortunate away from home, the Benfica game springs to mind where we suffered bad luck and ended up getting beat. A bit of luck wouldn't go amiss.

"After Villarreal we still have two remaining home games and Aalborg in Denmark. It's going to be difficult at Villarreal and Old Trafford, they are tough games, not just for ourselves, but for any team.

"We will be looking to pick up a point or three but if we don't, I don't think it's the end of the campaign by any means."

Strachan is aware that Celtic's defence will have to perform better than they did against the Dons on Saturday.

Vennegoor of Hesselink opened the scoring in the first half but Aberdeen came back after the break with a fine double from former Hoops player Charlie Mulgrew, who had come on as a substitute for Scott Severin.

Celtic substitute Scott McDonald replaced Marc Crosas in the 70th minute and levelled the scores seven minutes later before Vennegoor of Hesselink snatched a 90th- minute winner.

However, Aberdeen could have snatched a point in injury time when Darren Mackie ran clear of the home defence but fired wide of the post.

Strachan said: "He said: "It's not the right time to analyse it after the game, players are excited and hyper and can get angry so we will analyse it later.

"I don't think it's fair that they should go home and hear me talking about them defensively. But we didn't defended great."

Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood also blamed his side's inability to defend properly, adding: "It was a game that I thought we could have won but certainly didn't deserved to lose.

"We went 1-0 behind from a sloppy goal but we got the equaliser and went ahead and at that time I thought we deserved it.

"Gordon might say his side were not in the form of the last couple of weeks but we made it very difficult for them.

"Celtic shoved on quality players, Aiden McGeady and Scott McDonald, and we stopped doing what we are good at from then on.

"You want your players to play football but sometimes it's just a matter of getting your boot on the ball and getting it away."
