The 24-year-old ended a six-game goal drought, netting his 20th of the season to put Celtic on course for a 3-0 defeat of Gretna on Sunday and had seemed set to start for the Socceroos in Kumning.

But McDonald will now not travel to China and is doubtful for the Scottish Premier League match with Rangers next weekend.

He is the latest high-profile casualty for coach Pim Verbeek after Everton's Tim Cahill was ruled out after suffering a recurrence of a foot injury.
