Jol ready to let Atouba impress

Hamburg boss Martin Jol has indicated he is ready to give Timothee Atouba a chance to impress despite reports the defender is wanted by Celtic.

Atouba played under Jol at Tottenham but was also sold by the Dutchman to Hamburg in 2005.

The 26-year-old remains with the Bundesliga club and Jol admits he has some regrets about letting the Cameroonian leave White Hart Lane.

"I know Atouba from his time with Tottenham. We had another very good left-back in (Erik) Edman and Tim said to me that he wanted to go to Hamburg," Jol said.

"When he played a good season here I thought perhaps I had made an error.

"He can still develop further. He is good in his own half but can still become better in the other half."

Jol is prepared to judge each player in pre-season training, which begins tomorrow for Hamburg, and Atouba could find himself a key figure in Jol's plans.

"With me all players are alike," Jol said. "They all begin with a clean slate."

"What are you talking about Hinkel was a decent signing who secured the right back position and allowed Caldwell to move back to CB which may have been a huge factor in us clinching the title! Also HOME TALENT? what home talent mate all the young scottish talent are playing for Celtic already Scott Brown, McManun and Sheridan is coming up so unless you want Thomas Scobbie or Gary Naysmith I think we should allow Strachan to look abroad. However, I agree that Atouba is not for Celtic."

"WHAW another defender like that one we got last season what was his name it went something like Hendle or was it Henkile who was out for most of the season threw injury and when he was on the field he was classed as a right back but he was in the other half of the field more that anf forward player so take the hint get some home PLAYERS in the team"
