Lennon fears for stars' fitness

Celtic coach Neil Lennon has revealed he spends most of an international break worrying what condition the club's star men will return in.

Eleven of the club's best players could feature for their countries in the coming week, making the Scottish champions' training base something of a ghost town.

Former Northern Ireland international Lennon told the Evening Times: "I'm sure what all managers would wish for is that the guys return without injuries that keep them out.

"It's always a quiet week when international games are on. In my own playing days, I was always away to represent my country. However, towards the end when I had stopped, I would be one of the few still hanging around Celtic.

"You can do a couple of light sessions, either training with the younger lads or do a session in the gym.

"We have a few guys doing that. We had a game during the week against Derry City so most of the guys who haven't got international commitments went over to play a part in that."

Of Celtic's internationals, five are on Scotland duty at Hampden Park, while Aiden McGeady is nearby with the Republic of Ireland.

However, Georgios Samaras (Greece), Artur Boruc (Poland), Bobo Balde (Guinea), Shunsuke Nakamura (Japan) and Scott McDonald (Australia) are all much further afield.

Lennon added: "Aiden won't have far to travel because the Republic of Ireland are in Dublin on Wednesday night. A couple of other lads are playing in Europe, but Naka and Scott have long journeys to contend with.

"The main thing is that everyone avoids injury. It doesn't leave you long to prepare for the next match, but that's just something you have to accept when you have a quality squad packed with internationalists."
