MK Dons remain above Peterborough on goal difference at the League Two summit after both clubs recorded 1-0 victories on Monday.
Mark Wright came off the bench to give the Dons a 1-0 win at Accrington. Paul Ince's side had been frustrated by Stanley for large periods of the match but 56th-minute substitute Wright was eventually able to get the breakthrough.
The 26-year-old midfielder volleyed a Dean Lewington cross past goalkeeper Kenny Arthur seven minutes from time to give his side maximum points.
Second-placed Posh kept the pressure up on the leaders with a home win over a Chester side reduced to 10 men.
Posh midfielder Dean Keates got the crucial breakthrough in the 71st minute when he headed home while Chester lost Tony Dinning after he was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Hereford remain in the automatic promotion places by a point despite suffering a 2-1 defeat away to a Lincoln side who played the majority of the match with 10 men.
The home side had Scott Kerr sent off for a foul on Clint Easton in the 29th minute but took the lead two minutes later when Dany N'Guessan's low shot from outside the penalty area flew into the bottom right corner of the net.
Hereford finally made their extra man count and equalised in the 62nd minute through striker Gary Hooper who finished well from inside the box after good work by Theo Robinson down the left.
But Lincoln stole the points with a penalty five minutes from time after Easton had fouled Ben Wright inside the penalty area.
N'Guessan took the resulting spot-kick and placed the ball into the bottom left corner.
The Bulls remain in third after fourth-placed Darlington were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Morecambe.
A Garry Thompson penalty in the 38th minute and a Jon Newby header three minutes later had given the visitors a 2-0 lead.
But the Quakers pulled one back through Jason Kennedy in the 84th minute before Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu's 20-yard equaliser in the 89th minute.
A Chris Dagnall hat-trick (81, 86, 90) helped Rochdale claim a 4-1 win over Rotherham at Spotland which left them a point outside the play-off zone.
Marc Joseph had earlier given the Millers a seventh-minute lead before Gary Jones equalised for Dale in the 30th minute.
Play-off rivals Wycombe and Stockport drew 0-0 at Adams Park while Chesterfield also remain in contention despite slipping to a 1-0 defeat at Bradford courtesy of Peter Thorne's 16th-minute winner.
At the bottom of the table, Macclesfield cashed in on results elsewhere to boost their survival prospects with a 3-0 drubbing of Barnet at Moss Rose.
Danny Thomas (31), Neil Ashton (41) and Francis Green (48) all found the net for the Silkmen, who move eight points clear of the drop zone.
Bottom side Wrexham were held to a goalless draw by Dagenham at the Racecourse while goals from Paul Scott (10) and Adam Rooney (37) saw fellow relegation favourites Mansfield slip to a 2-0 defeat at Bury.
Wayne Brown (81) gave Brentford a 2-1 win at Grimsby after Alan Connell (51) had earlier cancelled out Danny North's 19th-minute opener while Shrewsbury's home clash with Notts County finished goalless.
