Liverpool have fined Javier Mascherano after he admitted a FA charge of improper conduct following last Sunday's red card at Manchester United.
Mascherano has asked for a personal hearing which is expected to take place in London next Friday. But on Friday Anfield boss Rafael Benitez also revealed that Mascherano had been fined by the club - believed to be the maximum two weeks' wages of around £100,000 - with the 23-year-old asking that the money be donated to charity.
Benitez said: "Javier is a fantastic professional and he knows he made a big mistake, he apologised to his team-mates and the supporters and he has now apologised to the referee.
"He accepts he lost control after the sending-off and has said sorry to the referee. I have also talked with him now and told him he would be fined by the club, and he has accepted that and wants the money donated to charity.
"We would like a personal hearing now. This was the first red card of our season and we do not have problems of this kind. We will now await the outcome of the hearing and the lawyers are now working on it."
Mascherano will serve an initial one-match ban in the Merseyside derby on Sunday.
If the charge of improper conduct is upheld, Mascherano looks set to be in line for an additional suspension, probably for two matches, which would see him also miss Premier League games against Arsenal on April 5 and Blackburn eight days later.
However, any domestic ban would exclude the Champions League quarter-final first and second legs against the Gunners on April 2 and 9.
An FA statement on Friday read: "Liverpool's Javier Mascherano has admitted a charge of improper conduct and requested a personal hearing.
"The charge relates to his reaction towards referee Steve Bennett after being sent off against Manchester United on Sunday, March 23.
"The case will be heard by a regulatory commission on Thursday, April 3.
"Mascherano is currently serving a one-match suspension for the sending-off."

"I am been Liverpool fan for a long time. I know that ManU is our traditional enemy. We both can't get along. However, I never even bother to log on to their team page and read their news! The reason is Liverpool is a GREATEST CLUB in British HISTORY! Why bother to read so call the upcoming club's news? To all ManU fan, we thank you for showing your concern to our club as you indirectly can't deny that we are still the best club in British! Just ask yourself, will you be browsing the 3rd Division Team page to read their news? ( unless you are a fan of that club ) This shows that you care and salute our achievements and worried if we were to continue winning more trophies soon...To all the REDS fan, don't browse or post anything on their team page anymore! We should be just care for our club! Let the people that envy and jealous about us continue to do so by contributing their so call thoughts and opinions to our club. YNWA "

"Why is it that only Liverpool fans can justify the actions of JM. Everyone else can see what a prize idiot he was for getting himself sent off. JM made the decision to run 20 yards across the pitch to question a decision which even his own captain did not dispute. And before all you tinted viewed scousers bang on about Wayne Rooney for back chat, Rooney has been yellow carded and indeed sent off for slabbering to the ref as has Roy Keane so JM got what any player for any team would get if they had behaved in such a manner. Lafa could see it coming just like everyone else who watched it could see it coming. It would seem the only person who couldn't is JM which makes him an idiot. Now we get the classic delusional double speak ala 1984 from all the Pool fans who can't face up to the fact Liverpool can't compete with United at the moment."
