Venables blasts captaincy 'audition'

Terry Venables has criticised Fabio Capello's decision to rotate captains and believes the Italian is showing his international inexperience.

Capello: Yet to pick his permanent skipper
Capello: Yet to pick his permanent skipper

Steven Gerrard led the side for Capello's first match in charge of England against Switzerland in January with Rio Ferdinand taking over the armband in France last Wednesday.

Capello is planning to give at least two more players the captaincy before settling on a permanent skipper for the World Cup qualifiers, but former England coach Venables believes the system causes "aggravations where there should not be any".

Writing in the Sun, he said: "It worries me to see the England captaincy turned into some sort of audition. Why is Fabio Capello wasting precious time asking these questions when the World Cup qualifiers are getting closer by the minute?

"Capello has never managed an international team before. But believe me, it is a whole new ball game. Decisions have to be made sharp and quick."

Venables has thrown his weight behind Chelsea skipper John Terry, who was captain under former boss Steve McClaren, for the role.

"I would give the skipper's job to John Terry, who is a natural leader," added Venables. "Rio Ferdinand has a nice way, Steven Gerrard leads by example, but JT has the edge - as long as he puts all his off-field nonsense behind him."

"People forget that Gerrard led England in many of the games when McLaren was at the helm. Gerrard cannot lead the team. But El Tel ultimately is right! We need a skipper to stick, and now is the best time. Rio showed no signs of being a good leader. Gerrard is not a natural leader. terry has been out of form as of late, but that does not mean his leadership skills have gone along the same lines as his form. Capello needs to choose a permanent skipper, and one that has captaincy experience. Because if you rotate captains, it can upset the flow of the football, and what will happen if he chooses a permanent captain for the WC Quals and it goes pear shaped? More rotations. Captaincy rotation is worse than rotationg players positions! Terry Venables has done nothing for England in which we can praise him, but this is something I agree with him on 100%"

"Man U fans will be Rio is best, Liverpool - gerrard and chelsea - terry. Venables is an idiot, Capello doesn't have to worry about a major tournament becasue of the predicament 'El Tel' put us in. To thrown my hat in the ring, Rio is who i would go for."
