Champs Lge final - player ratings

TEAMtalk takes a look at how the Manchester United and Chelsea players rated in Wednesday night's thrilling Champions League final in Moscow.

Ronaldo: Seven-up in ratings
Ronaldo: Seven-up in ratings

Manchester United:

EDWIN VAN DER SAR: Good one-handed reaction save to deny Michael Ballack at close range in the first half. However, his slip allowed Frank Lampard to equalise on the stroke of half-time. Saved the crucial penalty from Nicolas Anelka. 7

WES BROWN: Surprise provider for the opening goal with a left-footed cross. Was hardly tested defensively. 7

RIO FERDINAND: Was unfortunate for Chelsea's equaliser but otherwise showed a cool head, although could have given away a penalty late on in normal time when he appeared to catch Florent Malouda. 7

NEMANJA VIDIC: Strong in the air and put in his usual solid performance at the back, managing to keep Didier Drogba quiet for long periods. 8

PATRICE EVRA: Got forward whenever the opportunity arose and found himself in some good positions but crossing let him down at vital moments. 7

MICHAEL CARRICK: Held well in midfield but could not find a way to unlock the Chelsea defence. 6

OWEN HARGREAVES: Showed willingness to get forward from an unfamiliar wide right position and delivered some useful crosses. Looked more comfortable when moved inside. 7

PAUL SCHOLES: Was booked for a first-half challenge on Claude Makelele and only briefly showed his class on the ball. Substituted for Giggs with three minutes to go for a disappointing end to his long-awaited Champions League final. 6

CRISTIANO RONALDO: Playing on the left, had the beating of stand-in right-back Michael Essien both on the ground and in the air, as demonstrated by the opening goal. Became less of an influence as the match wore on. 7

WAYNE ROONEY: Often dropped off to pick up the ball but was a peripheral figure throughout. Looked well off the pace. 6

CARLOS TEVEZ: Missed a great chance from eight yards in the first half but was always a willing runner up front and not afraid to tackle back. 6

Substitutes

RYAN GIGGS (on for Scholes, 87): Had a toe-poked left-footed shot cleared by John Terry's header in his only chance. 6

NANI (on for Rooney, 101): Never given the ball enough to provide the inspiration for a breakthrough. 5

ANDERSON (on for Brown, 120): Sent on for penalties.

Chelsea:

PETR CECH: Great double save from Tevez's header and Carrick's follow-up in the first half. Could do little to stop the goal. 7

MICHAEL ESSIEN: Was out of his depth against Ronaldo in the first half, with his poor positioning at fault for the first goal. Improved considerably in the second half and was able to get forward with more purpose. 7

JOHN TERRY: With both United forwards dropping deep at regular intervals the Chelsea captain was rarely tested in an individual encounter. Superb block from Giggs in extra time, missed the penalty which would have won it in the shoot-out. 7

RICARDO CARVALHO: Dealt comfortably with most things thrown at him and was commanding in the air. Hardly ruffled throughout. 7

ASHLEY COLE: Had an easier night than expected facing Hargreaves and not Ronaldo. Was not able to bomb forward and get behind the United defence or offer support to Malouda as much as he would have liked. 7

CLAUDE MAKELELE: Got himself unnecessarily booked in the first half after being fouled by Scholes but provided an important role in front of the back four as Rooney and Tevez took it in turns to fill that space. 7

MICHAEL BALLACK: After a quiet first half with United dominating, he found more time on the ball and his range after the break, with a number of slide-rule passes splitting the opposition defence. Increasingly became Chelsea's focal point for attacks as the game wore on. 8

FRANK LAMPARD: Trademark run from deep was rewarded with Chelsea's equaliser on the stroke of half-time. Unlucky when his shot on the turn hit the crossbar in extra time. 8

FLORENT MALOUDA: Provided little support for Drogba in the way of crosses and failed to do anything when he did get the ball. Could possibly have had a penalty in the second half when he got past Ferdinand. 5

JOE COLE: Was anonymous for long periods as he struggled to get into the game against the impressive Evra. Replaced by Anelka in extra time. 5

DIDIER DROGBA: Failed to find the form which destroyed Liverpool in the semi-final second leg. Never got behind the United defence and was mostly dominated in the air but hit the post with a long-range effort before being stupidly sent off for slapping Vidic late in extra time. 5

Substitutes:

SALOMON KALOU (on for Malouda, 93): Never really made an impact. 5

NICOLAS ANELKA (on for Joe Cole, 99): Added pace to Chelsea's front line but had little opportunity to get beyond the defence. 5.

JULIANO BELLETTI (on for Makelele, 120) Sent on for penalties.

 Man Utd 1 - 1 Chelsea

"PAUL SCHOLES: Was booked for a first-half challenge on Claude Makelele and only briefly showed his class on the ball. Substituted for Giggs with three minutes to go for a disappointing end to his long-awaited Champions League final. 6 only briefly showed his class which only led to a goal!!! Sorry but nuff said. Don't mean to sound arrogant but i'm agreeing with you at the same time. he did briefly show his class by carving the chelsea defense and setting up good ol wes brown (legend) for that cross that led to a goal, what more can i say or what more can u ask for. the boy done his job. Well Done. At the same time he did more for the team."
