Martin O'Neill has admitted it is "more important than ever" to bring in new signings now that Gareth Barry's future lies away from the club.
O'Neill is resigned to losing Barry even though he will demand Liverpool meet his £18million valuation of the player before the saga comes to an end.
Olof Mellberg, Thomas Sorensen and Patrik Berger have already left since the end of last season plus on loan Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson.
But O'Neill is determined Villa will avoid a repeat of last season when they finished sixth in the Premier League despite having the smallest squad in the division.
He said: "We're hoping to try to add to the squad. The players did fantastically last season but we had the smallest squad in the Premier League.
"We wouldn't want that to happen this season so we're going to address it. Even if Gareth had decided to stay, we were still going to address it.
"But now it's even more important to do it than ever. It's the time for anticipation now. Players are back for pre-season training and, with the European Championships out of the way, it's obviously all systems go for everyone."
O'Neill insists he has been stepping up his plans to bring in new blood during June and that was not hindered by working as a TV pundit for the Euro 2008 finals.
He said: "I went out and did some games for the BBC. I was working there for two or three days in the week but then coming back and working here.
"It was not as if I spent three weeks out in Austria - not that I should have to explain myself to anyone other than one person at this football club (owner Randy Lerner)."
O'Neill is also aware his squad have to click back into gear quicker than normal as they will be on Intertoto Cup duty in just over two weeks.
He said: "My normal build-up would be a wee bit more leisurely, getting players into it and building into it. But here we have to try and get into competitive mode very early on.
"Now we've got to get ourselves together, get our preparation ready for the Intertoto."
Villa will fly out to Switzerland on Tuesday and will play FC Wil on Thursday and FC Zurich 48 hours later.

"Actions speak louder than words MON. As a Villa fan I've heard it all before - including from you. So stop the posturing and yakking and start the recruiting."

"we dont have to sell barry to raise money for signings since our american owner has got his cheque book out when required but my problem is it MON hasnt asked often enough. im bit worried that we are going to end up like the start of last season and sign only a couple of players rather than 5 or 6 top quality players that we really need. bring back bloody o'leary for the transfer windows and buy 10 players then let MON get on with things and give us a chance of repeating last season and being in with a shout of europe. if we dont sign many quality players then top 10 finish will be a good season, cant see lightning striking twice. just let barry go as well! its gone on long enough, it was only 2 years ago he was going to pompey for £4.5m now we want £18m? its crazy, he has given us 10 great years so lets move on. the thing that is sad about it is that he has only ever said he wanta to play CL football, that doesnt sound to convincing on liverpool dont forget Barry that they play in 3 other competitions, i cant remember once any quotes saying he wants to win the league with liverpool so does he believe they arent capapble? (which they arent anyway) just go to liverpool and we can all move on."

"Petergunns - you're not wrong... they are debt ridden, and despite being in the champions league, appear to have a sell before buying policy - laughable really.... but then again, would you really trust rafa with your money after the constant toss he has signed..???"
