The Brazilian moved to the Mestalla from Arsenal in 2005 and spent two years on the sidelines with knee ligament injuries and was then left out by Ronald Koeman last term.

Now he has returned for pre-season and is relishing the new campaign as he aims to prove that the club were right to keep their faith in him.

"I received some offers over the summer, above all from England, because people knew I had recovered, but I want to stay with Valencia and to have a good season and be a success here," he told AS.

"I don't want to think about anything other than Valencia. I took care of myself during the holiday and I'm looking forward to what will be a very important season for me.

"Over the summer, I followed the training schedule I was given and that has allowed me to comeback already at a good level.

"This year really is vital for me. The previous three have been full of problems, mainly because of injuries. I came here to enjoy myself and I know expectations were high after I came from Arsenal, now I just hope I can stay clear of injuries.

"I came straight from the World Cup in Germany and although I did not have a pre-season, I was in good shape. I did well in the Intertoto, but then picked up my first injury.

"I recovered, but was then injured again and this time it took longer to come back from. When I was ready, Koeman came in as coach and he was not someone who helped me reach 100 per cent."

Despite the optimism, Edu admits that Valencia could yet decide to sell him if an offer comes in that they cannot afford to turn down.

"The club has decided to treat nearly all the players the same. If an offer comes in then Valenica are going to listen to. The club's financial situation is not the best and it is normal that they would see what is on offer," he continued.

But the former Corinthians playmaker is hopeful that new coach Unai Emery's different outlook will help everyone benefit and allow him the chance to be a success.

"He speaks to all the players and does not differentiate between some players and others like other coaches have done. He does not give more importance to one of two players and instead works with the whole team," Edu concluded.
