Cole and Cap keep cool as JT fumes

England goalscorer Joe Cole focused on the positives after his injury-time goal secured a lucky 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic at Wembley.

The Chelsea winger bundled in the ball after a goalmouth scramble but England played poorly, especially in the second half.

However, 26-year-old Cole was positive and insisted it had been a tough game against difficult opponents.

Cole told Setanta 1: "It was a difficult night, playing against a good team early on in the season and most of us played on Sunday.

"It was a tough game but we got a good draw against a good side but we are disappointed not to have won.

"But we haven't been beaten. We are building our confidence and getting stronger."

Cole played out of position when he came on as a substitute and went on: "I'm a winger but the manager wanted me to play off the frontman.

"New manager and new ideas, we've got to try things."

Head coach Fabio Capello praised England's first-half performance and stressed the strength of the opposition.

He said: "We played very well in the first half, we had a lot of chances to score.

"I'm happy because we played for a long time - for an hour - good, I liked it.

"But the Czech counter-attack was very dangerous and we need to work on that.

"I learned things that when the other team counter-attack we have problems.

"We are just starting the season and some players are not at the top physically and I'm sure in the next game we will be better. but I'm happy that we played better. We took another step forward."

New England captain John Terry was not satisfied with the result or the performance, but felt the players must focus on getting things right for the World Cup qualifying campaign.

"I think overall we expected more from the game but there are some positives and some negatives and we will sit down and analyse them," Terry said.

"Maybe we should have won the game with the team we had there - and now there are two weeks to go to reassess the game before the qualifying game against Andorra.

"Hopefully we can build on that and take the positives but things (under Capello) will take time to get right.

"The crowd were frustrated and the players fully understand that and we know we have to put on a better show.

"It is important to do that when the business of the qualifying campaign begins and we are keen to make up for what happened last time."

Terry was at a loss to explain how a number of players perform at the top level in the Premier League and the Champions League but are unable to transfer their form to the international stage.

"It has been a problem for the past four or five years and it's something we need to address as quickly as possible," he added.

"I don't know what it is and as a group we are trying to put our fingers on it.

"We have some players who are playing brilliantly for their clubs and if we can address that we will be going in the right direction but it's not something we can change overnight.

"When the qualifiers start we need to stand and be counted this time - everyone wants to beat us, as you saw with the Czech Republic, so we need to be able to raise our games and match their commitment levels."

"OK - John Terry, Rio and SG all had a chance at being captain and Capello decided on Terry. It shouldnt really make too much of a difference as they are all great captains in their own right. Fact is England should have 11 captains playing out there, all playing for the country and proud to do so, just because one puts an armband on should be irrelevent. The reason, in my opinion, that England players do not pay as well for their country is due to the difference in styles. Arsenal, Chelsea, MU and Liverpool all pay silghtly differently than each other but ALL have a mix of foreign skill and Britsh steel. Unfortunately for our national side players have to adapt to style that everyone can play which involves a lot of the steel and passion with a shortfall in the Foreign skill that they benefit from week in week out. Lets not muck around with wierd formations - just go 4-4-2 and play people in the position that they play for their club - I think Fabio thinks that he has to over complicate things to justify his wage..."

"John Terry should not be captain because he epitomises all that is wrong with football. Bad attitude on and off the pitch. Always screaming at refs and some of the things he's done off field should have got him locked up years ago."

"Johnny C - next time you write a comment on here, try to find some kind of connection between the one brain cell that you possess and the mouth that you are 'barking' from. JT is the best choice for captain, and would do anything do wear that armband. I don't think the blame for England's performance's can be shifted on to the captain, as it is clearly the whole team that doesn't gel. AND, as for Abramovich's millions, JT was clearly a quality defender before he pumped millions into Chelsea. I think you are one of those envious Man Utd fans who believe Ferdinand should have been England captain."
