Steven Gerrard will miss both of England's upcoming World Cup qualifiers after having an operation on Thursday to cure a groin problem.
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez revealed that Gerrard has been playing through constant pain after the Anfield side forced their way into the Champions League group stages.
A goal two minutes from the end of extra-time by Dirk Kuyt gave Liverpool a 1-0 aggregate victory over a brave Standard Liege side in the third qualifying round.
But it was clear that Gerrard was not at his best, and he will now go under the knife to make sure he is fit to lead Liverpool into the group stages in September.
Gerrard will miss Liverpool's trip to Aston Villa on Sunday, the England games with Andorra and Croatia and possibly Liverpool's home league game with Manchester United on September 13.
Benitez said: "He has a groin problem so he will have an operation and could be out for 10 to 15 days. It is not serious but we need to do it now.
"He has been playing some games in pain, not being 100% fit and we decided that this was the best moment for the operation.
"He had a problem for the first game with Liege, and also when he went away to play for England in their friendly last week against the Czech Republic.
"We talked with the doctor yesterday and today, and it was decided that Steven would play in this match with the pain. But now we will have to get the situation solved."

"I'm sick of england and their mediocre, passionless performances. I'm glad that they didn't even qualify for euro championships, the competition as a whole was better for it. if you like great football you should stick to club footy.

"To all you Man U fans who slagged Gerrard and the Liverpool fans off (have to admit some of the abuse that gets posted on here is sickening, you support a great club. so do we, respect all around). Anyway Hargreaves is playing tonight but will miss the England games coming up. I'm not about to slag anyone off. It happens, its football - good luck everyone this weekend."

"Im sorry i just had to comment against these under educated manu fans. England will improve without Gerrard??? i wonder who is continually englands man of the match every game because players like Rooney, Hargreves and Rio play diaoblically, rio being the worst. So tell me this if diver Ronaldo was out for united they wouldnt have used that as an excuse if they lost ... yeah, right. I think Gerrard would want to play in that game even if his legs falling off so dont be so sure he wont play. Dont underestimate how much he hates united."

"gerrard? england is never gonna miss him. in fact, this will determine the fact that england will do better without this crap. england's passing game will definite improve. he won't be standing against rooney, beckham and lampard's creative play. how long have i been waiting for a fast-flow passing game from england. this is the time!"

"Seeing as Gerrard played on the left last time I'd hope to see Ashley Young getting a start. Though seeing as he didn't even make the squad last time it seems unlikely. "

"England rocked???? Should the headline not revolve around his club being rocked instead of the mediocre ego inflated country he happens to be from and has the misfortune to line out for?"

"Who cares about England, lets just hope Gerrard is out of the Utd game! (Even though Andreson will have hiom in his pocket like last season)"

"don't blame him one bit. his club pay his wages, he should miss as few club games as possible. and why would anyone want to play for england at the moment? can already hear the excuses when we beat you at anfield (again) in a couple of weeks though..!"

"You could talk all day about England and get nowhere. But if you ask me i think this is a good think. Gerrard doesn¿t do a fat lot for us anyway. We should play young players who are honoured, enthusiastic and willing to play for their country. So on the basis my team would have to be: Kirkland, A.Cole, Terry (Woodgate), Rio, Richards. A.Young, Barry, Jenas, J.Cole, Rooney, Crouch (Owen)"
