Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits he is no further forward in his bid to bring in new faces before the transfer window closes.
Dimitar Berbatov has handed in a transfer request at White Hart Lane in pursuit of a move to United, but Spurs are yet to accept a fee and are willing to play the Bulgaria striker in the reserves if their valuation is not matched.
Ferguson is thought to have other targets as well as Berbatov, and speaking generally about the potential of signings before Monday's deadline, he said: "I'm less optimistic so we'll carry on.
"I've no idea what's going on. It's very hard to get communication with some people in life."
Spurs are poised to sign Roman Pavlyuchenko from Spartak Moscow but the two deals are not connected and the Russian's arrival is not dependent on Berbatov leaving.
Spurs are also in the hunt for other players and have been linked with playmaker Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St Petersburg.
Berbatov appeared to be at the point of no return last weekend when he was considered psychologically unfit to play against Sunderland, which was thought to signal his departure to United.
United chief executive David Gill, who insisted he does not want to step into Brian Barwick's shoes at the Football Association, added on Sky Sports News: "Clearly there's not long to go, you'll have to wait with bated breath.
"We're working on it but I've been doing transfers for many, many years and know nothing is done until it's done, either in or out."

"madd7: you don´t need him? without ronaldo in your side you have no one to put the ball in goal.. Rooney scores what, about 8 goals in the league? But hey, you guys have Fletcher, a real gem of a player, he he he he he he he!
I say lets keep berba, he will play after christmas when he realises that the team are bigger than his ego. coys"

"I know it sounds obvious but it all comes down to how much a player is worth. If the Arshavin deal really is dependant on the Berbatov deal then we can't pay over the odds for one and sell the other on the cheap. I wouldn't mind if we sold Berbatov for £10m if we could get Arshavin for £5m (or someone else, possibly a proper striker?)
Ps. I heard someone say £20m plus Saha, sounds good to me!"

"In reply to Brack - Yes i do agree with what you say. Spurs value arshavin at what they think and the club are sticking to the guns so the transfer ended...... Man utd should either meet the value spurs have set or leave it already! peace! "

"Agree with most of these comments - most Manure fans agree that Berba or another striker i a requirement if they are to retain the title this year, but they haven't conducted themselves well or covered themselves in glory and they have no divine right to take the best players just because they feel like it. Berba has been a top striker for us and will leave, if not now then at some point....but you watch how quickly his attitude changes when he sees his value plummeting due to not getting regular first team action. His agent, Danchev, will be beside himself!! He's too old to waste 2 years playing for the reserves at Spurs - stick tight to your guns Daniel Levy - It's £30m or nothing. Just look how committed Garath Barry seems to be all of sudden now there's no move on the horizon...."

"luvthespurs. I assume you take the same view with regard to Arshavin? Spurs being obviously unwilling to pay Zenit what they believe him to be worth!"
