JK blasts 'disrespectful' Trapattoni

Interim Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear has labelled Giovanni Trapattoni 'disrespectful' for recommending goalkeeper Shay Given to Italian clubs.

Given: One of the best in the world
Given: One of the best in the world

Republic of Ireland coach Trapattoni admitted earlier this week that he had spoken to coaches in Italy about the Magpies stopper.

Trapattoni believes Given has the ability to be rated on a par with Italy's number one Gianluigi Buffon and his comments led to suggestions he was touting the shot-stopper to Serie A clubs.

Newcastle's interim manager Kinnear is unhappy with the Italian's views on Given and hopes Trapattoni was merely trying to curry favour with the 32-year-old.

"I think it's a little bit disrespectful," said Kinnear on Sky Sports News.

"Shay, I think, has got another three years here on his contract.

"Why on earth Giovanni would want to bring out a statement like that I don't know - maybe he was just getting on the good side of Shay."

Given has spent over a decade at St James' Park and has recently been linked with a move to Newcastle's Premier League rivals Tottenham.

"Given's the best keeper produced from Ireland and Britain from the past long time. No English keeper could even hold a candle to him over the last decade or two. How many times he's saved Ireland, I can't even remember. I feel so much better when I know he's in goal for my country. I applaude him for staying at Newcastle for so long and being so loyal to the club, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't like to see him at a better team, just for him. He deserves a few medals. I tell you, I wouldn't mind seeing him at Liverpool. Not one bit."

wilsonid (Newcastle United fan)

"I agree with the earlier toon comment - Given should think of himself and move to a club that will win something before it is too late for him."

D_Pool (Liverpool fan)

"In this situation I think JK is in the wrong and that Trapattoni was only giving Given praise. "SuperJonas" too right fair play to JK for what he said to the press, they needed to be brought down a peg or two. In fact I wish more people did speak out against the press as they fell they can say what they like. I look at some of the Irish media and they are already calling for Trapattoni's head after on 7 games in charge and having got 7 out of 9 points in our qualifying group campaign. Bloody Muppets!!!!!"

"as1982: So what? They had it comming the muppets. Think they can publish anything and the ones the personally abuse with their rubbish writing shall just bend over? Good on JK for shutting them up properly."

"Why wouldn't he, Peterbrough are way better than Newcastle!"

kevikeez (Newcastle United fan)

"shay should move to man united ad win everything he can in the next 3 years and complete his remarkable career as newcastle will bring nothin for him...n yes it`s coming from a newcastle fan myself..."

farmer_john (Arsenal fan)

"kinnear's a legend. it's really refreshing to hear a manager, or anyone in fact, speaking their mind and sod the consequences. there's nothing worse than career journalists who'll do or say anything to get their promotion."

garyjhooti (Chelsea fan)

"making a player go down with a sinking ship. cant wait 2 c the result this weekend, newcastle were the worst side we played last season but im sensing an upset for sum reason.... it will probably be a 5 - 0 win for chelsea but im slightly warey!"

mcgroin86 (Stockport County fan)

"It may be disrespectful, but Given has carried the pitiful defenders that have been thrown in front of him for a decade... maybe he SHOULD leave"
