Ronaldo tipped for Ballon d'Or glory

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo is set to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or ahead of Barcelona's Argentine playmaker Lionel Messi.

The Portugal winger is clear favourite to claim the award, formerly given to the European Footballer of the Year but now expanded to include players from all over the world, after an outstanding year with the Old Trafford club.

Ronaldo scored 42 goals last season to propel United to glory in both the Premier League and Champions League.

His summer efforts at Euro 2008 were overshadowed by a long-running transfer tussle involving Real Madrid but his achievements continue to be recognised.

The 23-year-old is already FIFPro World Player of the Year and also took the top prizes from the Professional Footballers Association and the Football Writers last season.

Ronaldo is set to become the first United player to win the Ballon d'Or since George Best in 1968.

Ronaldo finished runner-up to AC Milan's Brazilian ace Kaka last year in the annual poll of journalists organised by the magazine France Football, who plan to announce this year's winner on their website at 2am on Tuesday morning.

This year, his closest rival is thought to be Barca's Messi but the Argentinian has already endorsed Ronaldo's claim.

Both were on a shortlist of 30 players announced by France Football in October which also included a number of other Premier League players.

Ronaldo's United team-mates Wayne Rooney, Edwin van der Sar and Nemanja Vidic all featured, as did Chelsea's Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard. Emmanuel Adebayor and Cesc Fabregas, along with Liverpool pair Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard.

The award was last won by a Premier League player in 2001 when Michael Owen, then of Liverpool, took the prize.

"A top player. The most skillful player in the short history of the premier league. A bit petulant but completely unprotected by premier league referees! The obvious choice for the Ballon dÓr."

"United fans boo him just as match as arsenal fans do Ade and Gallas....they get over it! Don't hate...on the best..you can only admire and watch."

RQuaresma (Manchester United fan)

"well if he doesnt win it after such a brilliant season last season he will nvr win it. he will be fifa world player of the year as well. cuz quite simply he has been the best player on the planet this yr. simple as that. but i think he wun reach anywhere near last season's standards this season simply cuz i think thatz his peak alr n hez starting to lose the desire to play for utd. if he doesnt get his move to madrid next summer i dun think he will be the same player as he is now."

"We don't need to boo at him, the utd fans are doing that for us."

"42 goals from a midfielder. How can he not win this? Messi is playing well but wasn't he injured last season?"

hgd7 (Manchester United fan)

"well done mate. After everthing you did last season there is no one even close to matching the success you had! Give opposition fans even more reasons to boo you lol"
