Rafa rules out move for Reds old boy

Rafael Benitez made it clear after Liverpool's home draw with West Ham that he will not make an attempt to re-sign Michael Owen in January.

The Reds' co-owner George Gillett made a surprise visit to Anfield to see his side take over at the top of the Premier League, despite a frustrating 0-0 draw on Monday night.

It is thought Gillett was in Liverpool for discussions with Benitez over the Spaniard's proposed new contract.

Benitez said after the match: "George Gillett is here, but there is no news yet on the contract. We are waiting for further communication, we do not have that yet. We will finish our conversations soon and start thinking about football."

The Spaniard admitted that striker Robbie Keane was frustrated with his withdrawal in the second half, but went on to deny any link with a transfer window move for former Red and current Newcastle striker Owen.

"Robbie Keane, when he came off, was disappointed. But players always want to be out on the pitch for 90 minutes, but we were thinking of different solutions and David Ngog did well.

"We will have Fernando Torres back soon, and I can assure everyone that clearly we are not going for Michael Owen. Clearly.

"Every week it changes. We have won more point so if we win at Blackburn next we will stay top. We should enjoy it, we have one more point and everyone should be pleased."

"dee11 Mikey Owen is not the player he was 4 years ago. More importantly when he left us he was worth about $20m. He would not resign so we had to sell him on the cheap for $8m. That could have bought us a very good replacement such as Ronaldo who we could not afford due to being outbid by United. If we get him back for a knock down price great. As long as he is prepared to play second fiddle to Torries and Keane. "

"I'm not sure any club in England which would be a more attractive proposition to him than Newcastle (i.e. the top four, Villa, Everton or Man City) would be interested in taking a risk on him at the moment, even though he would be free in the summer, due to his apalling injury record. Even with no up-front fee you're still talking £120k/week for him to be in the treatment room, even accepting that he is a class striker when fit."

"it amazes me how time changes peoples oppion, when owen was at liverpool he was a god, untouchable, a liverpool legend and all LFC fans saying that he is the best player in Europe, now days even if he said that i will pay the club to come back and ill play for free, most people would still be skeptical on whether we would want him or not"

"pity that we need another decent striker who scores goals regularly Owen fits that bill."

"Michael Owen is injury prone why would Rafa want to sign him? Maybe Zaki is a better option. I really hope Torres isnt going to be in one week and out the next. Anyone else interesed in seeing Keane play on the right for a couple of games?"

gavmca1982 (Liverpool fan)

"Michael Owen is a washed up judas, i dont want him back at anfield! we all know that rafa is going to sign some middle of the road player who wont improve our chances of catching the big boys. our squad is paper thin at the moment if we lose any more first team players to injury we could be in serious trouble. anybody else think gerrard played like an angry child again last night?"
