Sam Allardyce has declared his interest in the vacant Sunderland manager's job after Roy Keane quit the Black Cats on Thursday.
Allardyce has already been installed as the bookmakers' favourite for the Stadium of Light post, even though such a switch would make him the first man to manage both Newcastle and Sunderland.
"Sunderland are a great club so of course I'd be interested in talking to them," said Allardyce, who quit Newcastle 10 months ago. "I have huge respect for the chairman Niall Quinn and the job he has done."
Allardyce, who made 25 appearances for the Black Cats in 1980/81, added in The Sun: "I enjoyed the year I had at Sunderland and also when I did some coaching work there under Peter Reid. I also know how passionate the fans are about their team."
Allardyce's candidacy has also been backed by Kevin Nolan, who was his captain at Bolton.
"I would definitely give the job to Sam if I was Sunderland chairman - no doubt about it," he said.

"sunderland would be so predictable if fat sam took over. fat sam's tactics are crap long balls plus the way sunderland play straight down the middle of the pitch. i wont be suprised if many of there 'star' players will stay sunderland will go down FAT SAM as manager "

"ref Threadonaspool. The only thing LFC fans are good for is boring flags with toss pot slogans.
Message for SAFC fans BFS is a nightmare. I'm no lover of Sunderland, however I acknowledge that you like your football played the right way.
You'll not see any decent football if he gets the job."

"Cacapete; I have been to St James Park. I was sitting behind the dugout with the Newcastle season ticket holders and watched as some big Jordie guy shouted obscenities at Big Sam for his teams abysmal performance.
And with regard to macca999; on that day the Pool fans lifted the roof off St James Pk so your comment about Liverpool fans away from home is simply not true. YNWA!!
