The Republic of Ireland international returned to the first team at left-back in the 2-2 draw against Aalborg in the Champions League.

He replaced Patrice Evra, and the Frenchman will miss Saturday's Premier League match against Tottenham at White Hart Lane because he is suspended, along with Wayne Rooney.

O'Shea is aiming to retain his place in the side and said: "If the manager does pick me he knows I can do a job there.

"It is always the case that if you get your chance you want a run in the side. You know you get better as the games go on.

"I played right-back for a few games, then central midfield before picking up a bit of a knock a few weeks ago. I know if I get a run in the team I will do well.

"The quality of the training we do is very sharp and keeps you ready for matches."

Dimitar Berbatov (Achilles) and another Tottenham old boy Michael Carrick (thigh) both missed the draw with Aalborg through injury.

Rio Ferdinand also suffered a back spasm, which places a question mark over his chances of making this weekend's trip.

Sir Alex Ferguson, however, is optimistic all three will be available in what he believes is a crucial game in the campaign.

Trailing leaders Liverpool by six points, the Scot knows the gap may increase still further next weekend when Rafael Benitez's men visit Arsenal and second-placed Chelsea go to Everton.

At the same time, United will be packing their bags and getting ready to head home after completing their Club World Cup campaign in Tokyo.

As Ferguson feels the Red Devils must be within touching distance on New Year's Day to stand any chance of completing a title hat-trick, the significance of their encounter with in-form Spurs is clear.

"It is one of our most important games of the season," said the United boss.

"We have a great record down there, and I hope we still will have."
