Shearer: Rovers must buy to stay up

Former Blackburn striker Alan Shearer has warned managerless Rovers that they will need to spend to avoid Premier League relegation.

Paul Ince was sacked on Tuesday after the Ewood Park board lost patience with the former MK Dons manager following a run of three league wins in 17 games.

Ex-Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce and former Rovers chief Graeme Souness have been installed as favourites to succeed Ince, but Shearer believes it will take more than a new man at the helm to save his old club.

Shearer, a legend at Blackburn in his playing days and a rumoured managerial candidate, believes the club must make funds available to the eventual new occupant of their hot-seat to allow for squad reinforcements.

"They need to spend in the transfer window because the squad has clearly not got the strength it needs," the former England captain said in The Sun.

"If they go down they could find it very difficult to come back up because it is getting much harder for clubs to bounce back.

"I think Blackburn see themselves as a top-10 club and so they should.

"Well if they want to be that they are clearly going to have to spend."

"Alan Shearer was an absolute hero of a player. I don't see why some people on here believe he has to take a high profile managerial role just for his opinion to be heard on issues which he knows a lot about. He has clearly been asked a question to which he has given an honest response. He has not called a press conference! Give the guy a break!!"

"i wish someone would pay him to shut it, doesnt have a clue "

"socks4football: Is Alan Shearer not someone you're happy to hear from then? I can;t see why he is asked anything... an ex-england captain, Newcastle Captain, blackburn legend, a prolific Premier League goal scorer and a current BBC Pundit. I just cant see why his opinion is valid??? You plum."

"I'm sick of hearing this fella talk everytime there's a sacking or a team's in trouble. If he's got the nuts then get in the game."

"not that he would ever take the job himself because he is too scared of failure!"
