TEAMtalk's Top Tips - Weekend

TEAMtalk's tipsters are looking to kick off 2009 in style by backing Peterborough, Crewe, Kidderminster and Torquay in the FA Cup this weekend.

It's FA Cup third-round weekend, which always brings a multitude of delights at TEAMtalk Towers - particularly when playing our favourite 'I Spy' game ("homemade foil and cardboard FA Cup - check... local mayor of obscure English town in full regalia - check... people sat in trees craning their necks to see into dilapidated stadium - check..." etc).

But our main task is trying to spot where the shocks will come up and down the country, and having recorded an (admittedly small) profit in our opening run of bets before Christmas, now is the time for TEAMtalk to strike it big as Britain lurches headfirst into penny-pinching 2009.

Just don't come here asking for handouts when the recession bites (in fact, we'll probably be asking you for donations).

Anyway, onto the tips...

West Brom v Peterborough - Rob McCarthy

Peterborough to win (draw no bet), 7-2

Bit of a long shot I know, but the FA Cup does throw up some surprise results so I'm going to plump for Posh to shock the Baggies at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

Tony Mowbray's main priority is Premier League survival so he may opt to pick a few of his fringe first-teamers while Posh are going well in League One under Darren Ferguson and are coming off the back of a 6-3 win at Cheltenham last time out.

They also have some decent goalscorers in their ranks in Aaron McLean and Craig Mackail-Smith, so it has to be worth a punt - although I'm hedging slightly in case it goes to a replay.

Millwall v Crewe - Jon Holmes

Crewe to win (draw no bet), 4/1

Here's an all-League One encounter between third place and bottom place - but don't the league positions fool you into thinking it's a home banker.

The promotion-chasing Lions hit a blip over the festive period, failing to win their last three games and scoring just one goal.

They started that disappointing run with a stalemate at home to Crewe on the Saturday before Christmas.

Now the teams clash again in the cup and it's the Alex - under new management - who look in better form.

Dario Gradi passed the reins to Gudjon Thordarson with an emphatic 4-1 win at Hartlepool last time out, and with several players returning from illness and injury, the Icelander can put the freeze on Millwall in his first game.

The odds are slightly reduced but still very enticing in the 'draw no bet' market, so that's where my money is heading.

Coventry v Kidderminster - Ian Watson

Kidderminster to win, 8-1

Chris Coleman appears to have injury and illness problems going into a Midlands derby I'm sure he would much rather not have to deal with.

With his side not likely to get dragged into a Championship relegation battle but even less likely to bother the play-off contenders, the Sky Blues boss admits he will most likely blood some of his youngsters against Kiddy, who have a good cup pedigree, especially against Midlands rivals, having defeated Birmingham at St Andrew's in 1994 and held Wolves at home 10 years later.

The Worcestershire side are riding high in the Blue Square Premier, sitting in fourth, comfortably amongst the play-off places.

Harriers have won eight of their last 11 games in all competitions and will have no fear of going to the Ricoh Arena to face the depleted 1989 cup winners.

Torquay v Blackpool - Sam Nightingale (our Blue Square Premier 'expert')

Torquay to win, 11/4

Torquay are currently fifth in the BSP and have a good home record with seven wins, three draws and three defeats at Plainmoor this season.

The Gulls lost their last home match 1-0 against Kidderminster so will be looking to bounce back and I fancy them to beat Blackpool.

The Seasiders earned a creditable 2-2 draw at home to Championship leaders Wolves earlier this week, but are short on numbers for this game with six on-loan players leaving the club.

Striker Liam Dickinson has been recalled by Derby, while midfielders Lee Hendrie (Sheffield United) and Adam Hammill (Liverpool), striker Steve Kabba (Watford), defender Zesh Rehman (QPR) and goalkeeper Graham Stack (Plymouth) have also returned to their parent clubs.

Blackpool will also be without striker Gary Taylor-Fletcher, who serves a one-match ban.

Skipper Rob Edwards - who netted the equaliser against Wolves - will also be missing with a hamstring injury, plus striker Steve McPhee (knee) and Danny Mitchley (foot) are also out.

So with the Seasiders severely weakened, I'm going for Torquay to cause an FA Cup shock.
