Magpies confirm Ferguson interest

Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear has confirmed Scotland and Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson is one of the men on his transfer window wishlist.

The Magpies have made an inquiry about the 30-year-old, who underwent ankle surgery last year, as Kinnear attempts to bolster his depleted squad for a Premier League survival fight.

Kinnear, who admits he may have to sell before he can buy, said: "I have enquired about Ferguson, but we will wait and see what the outcome of that is.

"We are finding it difficult to bring certain players from clubs. Our bids haven't been accepted so far.

"The problem is two or three clubs are in for the same players. At the moment, there could be teams bidding more than us.

"It would help if I could move some of the players here and get the finances in that way. But we have had no bids for them."

Newcastle have also been linked with Ferguson's team-mate at Ibrox, Algerian defender Madjid Bougherra.

Kinnear admitted on Friday he is targeting at least five additions this month, perhaps some of them on loan, to cover the deficiencies of a squad which prepared for Saturday's FA Cup third-round trip to Hull with 10 injuries, six of them long-term.

However, he did so having to fend off reports that unsettled goalkeeper Shay Given may be sold after growing frustrated with the club's plight following more than 11 years on Tyneside.

In addition, skipper Michael Owen has insisted he will not make a decision on his future until the end of the season, while Nicky Butt, Shola Ameobi and Steve Harper are still haggling over terms.

Kinnear said: "The January transfer window is hardly ideal.

"We have a lot of players missing at the moment who are out for six weeks or more.

"That means it's tough. If we pick up more injuries, we are in trouble for West Ham next week.

"We really need to get some bodies in. We need versatile players in who can play in a number of positions.

"We have got injuries all over the pitch. But we have to grin and bare it."

"Utterly pointless going for this kind of player. If this is the best we can hope for then we really are going nowhere."

sydneyger (Rangers fan)

"There's no way Barry will leave Rangers...he's a Ranger for life and is the club captain. He's been burnt before by going to Blackburn where he hated it so I can't see him ever going back down South."

finners62 (Newcastle United fan)

"Lets hope come the end of the season M Ashley brings in a decent manager that will have the pulling power not the plonker in charge at the moment Kinnear is at best a championship manager."

"A scottish Scott Parker. Hope Barry the crab comes nowhere near."

"Kinnear can't get top players he doesn't have that kind of pull - we will be looking at players like Ferg... that's all we will get. Sad but reality I think. I still wish KK was here would be more fun now."

toonster (Newcastle United fan)

"is there really nobody in the championship that could do the job this reject does ?? 30 yrs old, injury prone and genrally not very good... ticks all the boxes to join united though i guess !! please joe, NO ! promote youth team for free !"

SuperJonas (Newcastle United fan)

"Haha, sell before buying, almost so I would fukkin laugh my arse of if we went down and Ashley burned in hell, twat. Cant for the life of me understand why the hell he decides to purchase a club like NUFC in the first place, knowing how high the demands are, unrealistic, but still knowing that and buying the club and living in lala land and thinking he would make something nice outta it without heavy investments? Such an ARSE!"

Pies (Newcastle United fan)

"It seems to be obvious yet again that Ashley will not put the money in to buy decent players not players that couldn't cut it in the premier league. If he fails again to provide the funds and sells our best players (i.e. Given and Owen) then I think it's back to the barricades. "

"this has to be a joke??this is the class of player newcastle united want in..things cant have gotten that bad??Geremi is better than him!We need creativity...get elano in from city!!"
