The Trotters offered £2million for the midfield hardman, who is currently sidelined with a knee ligament injury, and are not prepared to up the ante.

Megson said: "We move on. Joey is a good player and a former England international.

"But he has certainly had his problems. There is an amount we would go to and that's it. We would not go any further."

Meanwhile Megson's problems are mounting ahead of the meeting with Manchester United on Saturday.

Gavin McCann broke a toe in the defeat by Arsenal at the weekend while Johan Elmander (hamstring) and Nicky Hunt (foot) are also receiving treatment for injuries.

"Barton is a highly overrated, overpaid and completely pointless thug. I am very happy that we have ended our interest. Hear hear russ!"

Ianner (Bolton Wanderers fan)

"I agree Learoyd. We made a bid, newcastle had the option to accept or reject, they rejected and we decided it wasn't worth going any higher. End of story really. "

"THANK GOD!"

"And so the 2 million bid should be rejected! Barton is worth more than 2 million even with his baggage he comes with. I think Barton could shine for Newcastle if they give him a chance"
