Wigan have turned down a £10million bid from Premier League rivals Tottenham for versatile Honduras international midfielder Wilson Palacios.
The 24-year-old has emerged as a target for Spurs boss Harry Redknapp as he looks to lift the north London club away from the relegation zone.
Palacios has made a huge impact since joining Wigan 12 months ago after a spell on loan at Birmingham.
Earlier on Wednesday, Wigan chairman Dave Whelan told Sky Sports News that there had been approaches for 'two or three' members of Steve Bruce's squad.
And Whelan has now confirmed that Spurs' opening gambit for Palacios has been rejected by the in-form Latics.
"Not enough money," Whelan told Sky Sports News when asked why the offer had been turned down.
Whelan has told Spurs how much he wants for Palacios and is now waiting to see if they return with an improved offer.
"That's their option," he continued. "They can either come back or forget it.
"£10million for that lad is not enough money.
"We've told them basically what we're looking for and we sit and wait and see what they do.
"It would be unfair to say what we're talking to Tottenham Hotspur about, it's private business, but we're asking for more than that obviously."
Speaking after the Latics' 1-0 defeat at Manchester United on Wednesday night, Bruce admitted he was powerless to stop either Palacios or any of his other sought-after players leaving the club.
"We are realistic at Wigan. We do offer them the chance to come to the Premier League and prove themselves to be Premier League footballers," Bruce told Sky Sports News.
"The big boys start circling and coming to nick your players and unfortunately, if they pay enough, then they are always going to get their own way, that is the way of the world unfortunately.
"We don't want to lose anyone but everyone knows in football that everyone has their price and of course we can't deny the players that opportunity to further their careers."

"Why do Redknapp and Spurs think they can just unsettle other clubs players' whenever they feel like it? They're in danger of becoming the most hated team in the Prem - IF they weren't already."

"AyresomeAce1886, Middlesbrough fan....How are Spurs trying to unsettle this player you idiot. Its there chairman who has told the press! And last time i checked it wasnt against FA laws to bid for a player.Wow you smoggies are thick!"

"Who do Spurs think they are, trying to unsettle and sign players from teams not too dissimilar to themselves, Boro (Downing)West Ham (Bellamy)and Wigan (Palacious), and in Wigans case significantly higher in the league. I think Spurs for a few seasons have become the most arrogant team in the premier league, they spout off about how they are gonna challenge the top 4, yet struggle every season (apart from the odd cup run). They act like the spoilt kid at school who isnt quite good enough to do things themselves so get their rich daddy to try to buy other peoples toys because they want them. Hope they go down. Cheer srant over."
