Red-card record for Premier League

The red mist descended on the Premier League this weekend, with Saturday's tally of eight sendings-off setting a new record.

With Barry Ferguson also given his marching orders in Birmingham's draw with Manchester City on Sunday, the two-day total of nine was the highest for a decade.

Liverpool were the worst offenders, with Philipp Degen and Jamie Carragher both seeing red in their defeat at Fulham, while two other games also featured a pair of dismissals.

Everton's Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and Carlos Cuellar of Aston Villa received their marching orders within minutes of each other at the end of their 1-1 draw, with Sunderland's Kenwyne Jones and West Ham's Radoslav Kovac following suit at the Stadium of Light.

Geovanni's red card added to Hull's woes in their defeat at Burnley but Jlloyd Samuel can have no complaints about his dismissal for tripping Chelsea's Didier Drogba.

"I think it should be seen as an achievement rather then a negative, lets try and get 9 next week. Sometimes bad tackles happen, sometimes players like ferguson knowing it is the last possible move of the game slows the game down to allow players to get back into position. Nobody truely cares. I can't remember seeing a truely bad tackle it is just the referees can't handle the pressure. The one in the London derby was amazing with his decisions consistent all the way through which is what was required."

"I think its a question of respect as much as anything. Players have to stop trying it on (diving, rolling around on the ground after a foul, answering back) and referees have to show more willingness to consult their assistants before handing out cards. You can't expect them to see everything, but when players are acting like WWE wrestlers it doesn't make their jobs any easier. Managers have a role to play also, telling their players to cut the nonsense. And as for a certain Mr Wenger who always appears to be looking in the opposite direction whenever one of his players does something, he of all people must realise that the beautiful game should not be won by the cheats."

"Cuellars sending off was a joke, the first foul wasnt yellow card worthy and the second one wasnt a foul!"

"geovanni was a disgrace, and ferguson was a idiot who should be fined a month wages. Anybody who got the red from two bookings can not appeal them"

jcosker (Liverpool fan)

"Think Carra's was fair enough as he'd been pushing his luck with Zamora for awhile. Although in his defense Zamora was pushing and tugging just the same. Degen's red was a terrible decision though. It was certainly a yellow for a late clumsy challenge but was not a dangerous one or malicious. The play was nowhere near a scoring opportunity so can't see why the ref pulled out the red other than poor angle of view. With Johnson and Kelly injured we are really in trouble since the other potential RB got sent off as well in Carra. Lyon certainly have an advantage after the mental effects that match will have."

astonvillaward (Aston Villa fan)

"There may have been a record amount of dismissals but i wonder how many of them will be rescinded?"

adrieahmad (Everton fan)

"hey hey, we got liverpool ;)

Can't bloody wait for those 2 games. My wish granted, thank you god!"

andman of adelaide (Bolton Wanderers fan)

"Couldn't agree more.... The red cards are dished out ad hoc these days and it seems to be all about the referee. The ref should be almost invisible where possible.... Having said that, the level of milking tackles and that is beyond a joke now. Drogba has to be one of the most theatrical arses of all time, which is a shame because he is a great striker!"

Tottenham Ozspur (Tottenham Hotspur fan)

"I disagree with twobobsworth. Mark Clattenberg has been fantastic this season and haven't seen him get a single decision wrong so not all refs are bad. PS I'm a Spurs fan and he did the Arsenal Spurs game at the weekend, thought he was excellent."
