John Toshack hailed a confident Wales performance but expressed sympathy for counterpart George Burley after the 3-0 defeat of Scotland.
Burley will come under increased pressure after a disastrous defeat by Toshack's youngsters, who were led superbly by Aaron Ramsey in the first international at Cardiff City Stadium.
The 18-year-old Arsenal midfielder scored a fine solo goal and helped to create strikes for David Edwards and Simon Church as Scotland were cut to pieces in fine first period by Wales.
Toshack expressed concern for Burley's position, believing his side were fortunate to win so emphatically.
"I do feel some sympathy for George," said Toshack.
"They did well early on and Wayne Hennessey made a superb reflex save, and, as we are a young side, things would have been different had that gone in.
"But once we got the first it helped us.
"We scored three goals in the first-half and our lads did well, but I do feel for George because his side were better than they looked, they were neat and tidy and could easily have been level with us at the break.
"Maybe their finishing was not up to the level of their approach work."
Toshack added: "I have known George a while and he didn't deserve what happened.
"We deserved to win, but it was not as easy as it looked."
Hennessey denied James McFadden with his legs before Edwards volleyed in, Church turned in from close range and Ramsay beat David Marshall following a mazy run.
Marshall could have been dismissed for handling outside the area early in the second half, but Toshack maintains the match was not easy viewing.
"It wasn't comfortable for us, not from where I was sitting," he added.
"I felt 3-0 at the break was not a fair reflection.
"But we did score three good goals and that was a long way back for the Scots even if the scoreline was not a true reflection of the game.
"We were not as good as the score, and they were better than they looked. But we should have had a penalty early on, and their keeper should have been sent-off."
Toshack, though, was quietly delighted with a maturing display from his side, which had an average age 22.
He reserved special praise for Ramsay.
"Ramsey had missed training with a back injury, he is shooting up and is a lot taller now than a year ago, which may be causing him his problem," he added.
"But he played his first full 90 minutes in the league for Arsenal last week, and he is certainly improving every time I see him."
Toshack is certain his young side will continue to get better, with the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign beginning next September.
"We have four friendlies before the next competitive matches next September," he said.
"We have no game until February, and we will know the Euro 2012 qualifying draw by then.
"Then we hope that 10 months down the line these lads will be better still.
"They can take a lot of encouragement from this win, the performance was the most important thing."
Striker Church, who began upfront with Ched Evans, also praised Ramsay's influence.
"It helps when you have Aaron Ramsey playing behind us, he was excellent and turned in a really good performance," said Church.
"We know the service we are going to get from him. It is a dream as a striker to have someone like that getting behind defenders and setting up chances."
