Republic boss Trap vows to fight on

Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni will not quit football over the Thierry Henry handball episode on Wednesday night.

Trapattoni: Won't quit

The France striker handled the ball as he set up William Gallas to score his team's winning goal in the World Cup play-off on that allowed Les Bleus to reach next year's big event in South Africa.

"The doubt does emerge," Trapattoni said when asked if he will continue in football, "but I don't give up.

"It took me years to forget about Moreno, but I don't give up."

Byron Moreno was the Ecuadorian referee who officiated during Italy's 2-1 second-round defeat to South Korea in the 2002 World Cup who later admitted Trapattoni's Azzurri were wronged during that contentious match.

"In the spring I will start to prepare for the European qualification," said the 70-year-old who is still under contract with the Irish.

"I have a dream: to take part in the World Cup 2014 in Brazil. It could be the end of a journey."

Trapattoni is still seething over Wednesday's game, though.

The Irish appealed to FIFA to have a replay of the encounter and even Henry said that was the best solution but football's world governing body today ruled there would not be another game.

Trapattoni vented his fury at FIFA in Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I would like to know what have I done to (Sepp) Blatter," Trapattoni said.

"If he explains it to me at least I would be calm.

"I often go to schools and speak of fair play.

"Perhaps I am a dreamer.

"FIFA has violated the rules imposing top seeded teams in the play-offs.

"It's treachery.

"I think even (UEFA president Michel) Platini was against this revolution."

Trapattoni continues to play Wednesday's events over and over in his mind.

"There's this double handball from Henry on Gallas' goal and on top of that (Sebastien) Squillaci was offside," Trapattoni said.

"It's murder.

"Even a blind man would have seen the double handball by Henry. The linesman was on line as the images show and he had perfect vision.

"I am certain that Mr Hansson (the referee) was in contact with the fourth official and to those who were looking at the images in slow motion.

"Why, when he understood that he had made a mistake, did he not change his mind? I think the time has come to have tv replays for these extreme cases.

"In 30 seconds you avoid colossal errors."

Trapattoni had harsh words for the referee.

"FIFA has done a great job," he said.

"For France v Ireland, you needed a top referee, instead they have sent a Hansson nobody."

"I have just been to the shop at my local some 40ks outside Brisbane, Australia. I was wearing an old Ireland South Korea and Japan World Cup Jersey. The shop keeper noticed it and soon I was sorounded my local people asking me what I thought about the farce which was Wednesday's match. If Michel Plantini thought that this would blow over and only a small nation of Ireland would be upset about these incidents then he was deadly wrong. The whole World is watching. People in a country as far away from Paris as you could get can tell something stinks when 1. You introduce a seeding system so France will not play a more difficult team. 2. Having been awarded the stonger seed France was the only team with this stonger seed to get the second game at home. 3. Missing the offside that let to the said goal!! 4. Missing the first hand ball that lead to the said goal!!! 5. Missing the second hand ball that lead to the said goal. 6. Theiry Henry states that he told the ref after he handled twice that he did so. Sorry this is no hand of God incident that was a one off miss by the referee this is something far more sinister. FIFA have a lot explaning. Personally I want to take them to court for breech of contract over the seeding system. "

"listen to be completely honest ref was poor, he was incinsistent for both team how diarra escapd a yellow card for persistent fouling was crazy. both he and the assistant were capable of spotting keanes handball in the area even though his hand was at his thigh. the whole thing stinks - fifa shifting the goalposts so the big name teams can get in. I remember the uproar when maradonas handball cost England so dont call us whingers or bitter, I dont want a replay but do want to see fair play - we are out because of FIFA's bias toward the so-called bigger teams. Blatter should have been sacked long ago, as long as football has a figurehead like him at the healm - football will always be about commercialism and not the actual sport."

"why should he quit?Just because some dirty frog cheated and cost them a possible world cup?Hope he stays on and gets justice. And justice would be France not getting past the pool play and getting smashed."

"Bitter old man comments.... Hansson was excellent before his linesman let him down. "

.... That is a pathetic statement. Trapattoni is a coach with a phenomenol record. He has turned a team of average players into a team who can mix it with the best & play France off the park. He would even make your team of average players challange for a European place something none of your 'wonderfully talented' managers have not been able to do for many years. I suppose avoiding delegation is the height of your ambition. "

"we need controversy in football its what makes the sport unique..but from time to time it wouldnt hurt if uefa showed some balls ...and acknowledged some wrong doings ...and showed that for the good of the game they will ...make positive decisions...and in this case..there are many arguments....bla bla bla..but a replay would be a good advert for the game and the world cup....and would maybe send out a message of positivity.....i doubt it will happen though...."

"We must move on from this. I was upset but thought asking for a replay was a bit over the top. No body else asks for replays when they lose and this has been blown way out of proportion. We were not robbed. They way this is being put is that we had the game won if it was not for that goal. but we didnt. We must move on from this. We must now concentrate on the Euros. Our team now knows how to play in an organised fashion, and we will be afraid of no-one. This illustrates the inportance of winning the group. Roy Keane has too much to say for himself. If he didnt agree he could have stayed quiet. Such disrespect is not warrented. But he's only making himself look bitter and disloyal. Glad trap is stayin on. What a manager."

"I respect Henry, I always liked him as a player (who wouldnt) & think he's genuine. A replay? no chance, FIFA took care of that. Proud to be Irish, Embaressed if your French (or FIFA)....Shame on you....But why didnt Henry tell the Ref when he did it?.......SHAME..ON..YOU ...HENRY!! SHAME!!"

"Bitter old man comments

Yeah because the standard of football in Sweden warrants as important a match as that!!"

dublintoffee (Everton fan)

"Trap hits it right on the nose. This was a conspiracy from the word go. To first backtrack and change the playoffs to a seeded draw, and then to go out to a double handball from henry and Squillaci offside with a linesman in perfect line of sight. Scandalous. Blatter got what he wanted, a sad day for football."
