Catt sinks his claws into Whelan

Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole has laughed off chairman Dave Whelan's claim that Steve Bruce left Wigan with some "dodgy signings".

Whelan suggested in the wake of Wigan's 9-1 drubbing at Tottenham on Sunday that new boss Roberto Martinez took over a squad which contained some players not up to scratch - and laid the blame squarely at Bruce's door.

He said: "Steve actually had a few dodgy signings just before he left Wigan and he (Martinez) has inherited those dodgy signings, so I can't blame Roberto one iota."

But Cattermole, who followed Bruce to Wearside this summer after signing for him at Wigan 12 months earlier, is puzzled at Whelan's comments which add spice to the Black Cats' visit to the DW Stadium on Saturday.

He told the Sunderland Echo: "I like Dave Whelan. I think he's a good chairman - a footballing chairman.

"But I don't understand where he is coming from with this.

"When you look at the guys Steve bought for Wigan, you just can't argue with his record - Wilson Palacios, Antonio Valencia - they were sold for big, big money.

"Not everyone's going to be a big hit but I can't understand Dave Whelan attacking the gaffer.

"I think he is just trying to take the heat off the new manager.

"You look at the signings the gaffer made at Wigan and, to be honest, I thought they were all good."

Cattermole is currently sidelined with a knee injury and he could be joined on the treatment table by top scorer Darren Bent.

Bent pulled up clutching his hamstring late in Saturday's 1-0 win over Arsenal at the Stadium of Light - a match in which he scored the winner - and underwent a scan on Monday.

The England frontman, who has scored nine goals in a impressive start to his career on Wearside, is a doubt for this weekend's clash and Bruce is hoping he is not set for a longer spell on the sidelines.

He told the club's official website: "Darren's had a scan and we're waiting for the results.

"If it is his hamstring, we could be looking at about three weeks out.

"We won't know anything more until the results come back so we will have to keep our fingers crossed."

Bent's absence would leave Bruce with a selection headache as Kenwyne Jones is suspended after being sent off against West Ham last month.

"Well if they were that bad im sure you have Martinez signings, a reserve team and a youth team set up that would benefit from first team football merely an observation."

"Ive no doubt Sunderland will finish higher, we are aiming for survival, but lets be realistic it is money that counts, Whelan wont spend it so Bruce left for a team with a new big money owner. Martinez will be a quality manager but has to do his time and dvelop, Bruce is a good few years down the line and has been relegated twice, so it isnt fair comparing them. Bruce was great for us but I wasnt sorry he left because we were only a stepping stone to pad out his CV. I have no grudges to bear with him, he saved us fom relegation. We will always be little unfashionable Wigan, but thats the team I love and who we are! I could just do without 9-1 score lines! "

"Hmmm, well lets end it with these two little posers then, and i invite fans of other clubs to offer their opinions :-)

a) who'll finish higher this season, Wigan or Sunderland/

and

b)who'd you rather have in charge, martinez or Bruce.

I defy even the Wigan fans to say Martinez!!

We'll see Dave, Rent a gob Whelan, we'll see!!"

"Dear dear SB why did you leave Wigan with a team who could beat Chelsea 3-1...you should be ashamed of yourself, then come to us and within 3 months and a few new signings produce a side who has managed to beat Liverpool, Arsenal and get within a wisker of beating Utd, with a team that finished 4th bottom. Whelan needs to have a good hard look at himself, how much of the money that Wigan took on player sales has he given Martinez to spend...maybe thats where the blame lies or maybe the new system doesn't suit the players, or he doesn't motivate them enough. One thing he will have done is motivate Sunderlands players for Saturday and the 5000 following we will bring...when we lost to Everton 2 years ago 7-1 Keano blamed himself and the players...nobody else..!!"

"Dead right MK_Gooner, about Palacios...As well as King, there was also Watson who wasn't the best!"

"If Bruce made some poor signings at Wigan then perhaps it was just part and parcel of him learning his trade like everyone has to. All his signings so far at Sunderland have been absolute quality. How on earth he can get the blame for Wigan losing 9-1 on Sunday I just dont know. "

"Valencia was already there and wenger advised Bruce to sign palacios while still managing at bham. "

"Valencia was already at wigan on loan when Bruce arrived the deal was already agreed, no credit should go to him for that. Jewell should be creditted with Valencia arriving at the jjb. Kappo, DeRidder bad bad signings by Bruce, Martinez also has some dodgy signings, thats what happens at a small unfashionable club like ours!"
