The left-back, 28, is set to link up with the Championship club on Thursday and will remain at the City Ground until the New Year. Aston Villa will be able to recall the player at 24 hours notice after the first 28 days of the loan.

Shorey, who has two England caps, is expected to make his debut in Forest's home game against Doncaster at the weekend.

Shorey began his career with Leyton Orient but shot to prominence at Reading, where he spent seven years and made over 300 appearances for the Berkshire club.

He joined Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee in August 2008 but has struggled to hold down a first-team spot and has played just one match since August.

"timbuxton - how is saying no offence to forest harsh. this is a guy in his prime how had been playing PL football, do you not see dropping down a league as a bad thing????? and your right forest are performing above expectations, 9th in the second tier??? nice one!!"

"timbuxton we do seem to get the odd Spuds fans on here making comments that make no sense at all. I hope Nicky Shorey does well at Forest for two reasons, he needs to get some confidence back and that he helps get Forest back where they belong in the EPL. Always had a soft spot for your team they have produced some excellent players in the past."

"Good player and more importantly will free up Cohan to move back into midfield. I agree with timbuxton something good is happening at Forest and all the very best to them!"

"alfried1983 of Spurs... Do a little research before making silly football comments of 'no offense to Forest'. I would watch out, I feel something is starting to build at Forest... great manager, young talented team with experience too, wealthy chairman who's actually a Forest fan... Sleeping giant is starting to awake!!"

"Oh look another Spur's fan voicing his opinion, really know one cares, shorey had his chance and he didn't do too bad on some occasions however on the whole he was the weak link in the defence, this has been solved by the signing of Warnock, Dunne and Collins. Shorey will do well at Forest though I do hope going to a very good team with a decent manager, wish him all the best!"

"big come down for this lad. was verygood for reading makes a move to villa and MON doesnt give him a chance, lets him waste then ends up on loan at forest- no offence for to forest. hope it works out for him. always liked him"

"villasoph......would u like to apologise to all the villa fans you shot down who spotted this on the cards around 8 months ago. Many thanks"

"The way i see it, this is a win win situasion for villa. Now we avoid Shorey holding up some youngsters place on the bench, and he also gets match fit in case we should need him. To those of you how think this is stupid because warnock may get injured, don't forget we have Luke Young who endued the left back position last season. And in case he also should get injured, we have an england international left back in James Milner! "
