SAF: Red Devils lacked composure

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United's youngsters will learn from experience despite being beaten in the Champions League by Besiktas.

A goal from Rodrigo Tello in the 20th minute at Old Trafford was enough to give Besiktas their first win in Group B, bringing to an end United's 23-match unbeaten home record in the Champions League proper.

Tello's effort from distance deflected off Rafael and past a startled Ben Foster, who had been recalled to the side after two games for England.

With qualification to the last 16 already assured, Ferguson handed starts to the likes of Federico Macheda, Danny Welbeck, Gabriel Obertan and Darron Gibson.

United were looking for the point that would have seen them finish as group leaders, but came up short.

Ferguson said: "I thought we needed a bit of composure. The young players were a bit anxious and that is understandable in a way.

"It was an experimental line-up in a way. We have to be fair in the way we assess the players in these games.

"The value is the trust we have got in playing these young players. They are potentially top players.

"We know about Macheda and Welbeck while Obertan has only arrived at the club after having a long spell out through injury.

"The important thing is, though, they showed a good level. In the first half we had good opportunities but got caught on the counter-attack, which can happen of course.

"The goal followed a deflection off Rafael and we were chasing the game. Deflections off the body have a certain speed and that can cause a problem."

United almost drew level in stoppage time but Besiktas goalkeeper Rustu Recber made two superb saves in quick succession from Macheda and then Wes Brown.

They also had a claim for a penalty dismissed late on by referee Stephane Lannoy when substitute Patrice Evra appeared to be blocked by Ibrahim Kas.

Evra appealed in vain and Ferguson questioned the decision, after feeling they also had a spot-kick claim rejected in the draw against CSKA Moscow last time around.

"I was right to be agitated, " said the United boss. "If you can't give one like this and the one against CSKA Moscow then you are in trouble.

"It's a penalty kick - that's two games in a row they have denied us stonewall penalties but what can you do about it?"

Besiktas coach Mustafa Denizli could not hide his delight at securing all three points.

He said: "The whole world knows how big a team United is at Old Trafford, so we are very pleased with this result.

"We came here with only one aim, and that was to win as we want to continue our journey in Europe.

"It is a very good night for Besiktas and Turkish football in general. I believe in this team but we need to win our next game in the group as well."

"What a way for the Manure's to lose their proud home record in the Champions League. To the team who were bottom of the group, without a win in the competition. Nice going Manure's :o>"

"Jay Spearing is a scouser. Anderson cost Utd 20 million and he is no better than our most slated player Lucas. Anderson was terrible last night and you all know it. How is he any better than lucas?? Hes the same player only more expensive and with less heart."

"oh of course our youth team is poor obviously we didnt win the carling cup with our youth team, oh why don't we try and lure amazing players like jay spearing oh what a great player he is"

"threadonaspool (Liverpool fan): You obviously didn't watch the match last night nor do you know anything about Manchester United. Let me tell you how the debt accumulated. The Glazers borrowed money from the banks, bought United and then passed the debt off to the club. It was a clever move from the Glazers because they didn't need the value of the club to be able purchase it. In theory the debt means nothing because United are worth more than the debt is, the bad point for the club is having to pay off the interest from the loan, this money should really be going towards investing for players."

"I don't see any Liverpool's youth better than Man.United's. Besides, young player need experience and time to improve. Who knows, someday one of them become another Ronaldo look-alike."

threadonaspool (Liverpool fan)

"It was clear from last nights performance that Utd have no real quality youth players coming through, apart from maybe Macheda. This means that they need to spend big big money to replace all the players that will be leaving in the next 2 years. Unfortunately for Utd the 80 million from the Ronaldo transfer isnt going to be enough. They need 5-6 world stars at least. But theyll also be competing with the Billionaires; Real and City. So who are they going to buy that the other big clubs have not already bought? Plus there is the small matter of 700 million quids worth of debt heaped on the club. Does nobody ever ask any questions about how this debt accumulated. Utd have been making massive profits for the last 10 years so how in Gods name can they be 700 million in the red? It just doesnt make sense. With the game creating new big name clubs such a Chelsea and Man City, will Utds stranglehold over football merchandise last much longer. When the football bubble busts what will happen to one of the worlds biggest clubs? A cause for thought!!"
