Hughton: Carroll not in January sales

Newcastle manager Chris Hughton insists striker Andy Carroll will not be leaving St James' Park in January, despite interest from Stoke City.

Carroll has been targeted by the Premier League Potters as a possible replacement for James Beattie, who is believed to be on his way out after a bust-up with manager Tony Pulis.

However, the 20-year-old has shown little interest in leaving his home-town club, who are aiming for an immediate return to the top flight.

United are seven points clear at the top of the Championship table and Hughton is keen to keep his squad intact.

"I wouldn't be prepared to sell him," said Hughton. "It's always a worry that other clubs will be interested in your players, but there hasn't been a bid and we'd certainly be grateful if that's the same come the end of the window.

"If there is, then it's testament to what these lads have done so far, but I don't envisage anyone leaving."

Though insisting that no key players will leave Newcastle in the New Year, Hughton is thought to be interested in bringing in Rangers striker Kris Boyd and Sheffield United centre-half Matthew Kilgallon.

The Blades confirmed on Friday that Kilgallon would be leaving the club next month and the Magpies boss admits he has been keeping an eye on the defender.

"That's something we knew about," said Hughton, whose team play Middlesbrough on Sunday. "He's one of a few players who interest us. I'm aware of his situation."

"ivanhoe and laughing magpie - You're only as 'big' as your league status and current status. Right now, I think more quality players would be inclined to join us than sportsdirect@St. James Park! (lol)"

"I dont mind him leave and swop him with beattie and a bit money would be fantastic. Carroll is a good player but he is nt profic striker, he should have scored around 10 till now if he wants to be a great and if in championship he cant score too many i dont see him scoring in primership."
