Roeder slams sorry strikeforce

Norwich boss Glenn Roeder ripped into his side's toothless attack as the shot-shy Canaries crashed out of the Carling Cup 1-0 to the MK Dons.

Sam Baldock struck the only goal of the game for the League One new boys against their Championship counterparts.

But furious Roeder - who has yet to see his side get on the scoresheet in two games this season - has warned his side they need to start showing some cutting edge in attack.

"We are hugely disappointed to go out of the cup at this stage," said Roeder. "Yet again we shot ourselves in the foot by creating chances and not taking them.

"We need to remedy that very quickly because we had the same problem on Saturday where we were creating chances but not scoring.

"That puts huge pressure on the defence to keep a clean sheet.

"Our keeper David Marshall has not had a save to make in these two games, apart from pick the ball out of the net three times.

"Defensively I think the boys have performed very well, it's just the boys at the top of the field who are not taking the chances.

"The boys who are missing the chances are taking them in training but that doesn't count.

"Hopefully this won't happen but the longer it continues they will start putting pressure on themselves.

"It is important that we keep making chances. Eventually we should start taking them."

Roeder's men were punished shortly after the half-hour mark when Baldock raced onto Keith Andrew's slide-rule pass to dink the ball over keeper Marshall and net his first goal for the Dons.

Norwich again had the better of the play after the break, but Darel Russell's long-range effort which rattled off the post was the closest they came to an equaliser.

And MK Dons boss Roberto Di Matteo believes his side's shock Carling Cup victory over Norwich can kick start their league campaign.

"I am very happy for the players," said Di Matteo, who saw his side slip to a 2-0 defeat to Leicester on Saturday.

"They have been working hard and they really deserved a win tonight. It was a cup game so we didn't get three points but it was a big confidence boost. It is better to win than lose.

"Confidence can move mountains so I hope they are going to take this in and learn that success is very sweet and hopefully they will like that taste.

"Norwich put us under an enormous pressure in the second half and I thought our team did extremely well to defend.

"You expect a Championship side to put you under pressure but they didn't have too many clear chances."
