Real refuse to give up on Ronaldo

Real Madrid insist Cristiano Ronaldo remains their number one transfer target despite Manchester United's insistence that they will not sell.

Ronaldo: Calderon won't let it lie

Sir Alex Ferguson met Ronaldo for clear-the-air talks on Monday and claimed on Friday that there was no chance he would be quitting United for Spain.

However, president Ramon Calderon believes Ferguson's optimism is little more than a ruse to get more money out of the Primera Liga giants who are reportedly willing to pay no more than 85million euros.

"This type (of transfer) is hard," he told Spanish media, when asked about Ferguson's comments. "But we're going to go for it all the same.

"I suppose it's all about a manner of theirs to let us know clearly that they're not going to lower the price in any way and that if we want him we have to pay a lot more money."

Madrid chiefs are said to be convinced the winger - who is currently recovering from ankle surgery - will join them before the beginning of the season.

When asked about Ronaldo by the Madrid players on their first day of pre-season training, Calderon reportedly reassured them with the words "Don't worry, we have it all sorted."

"This is what is happening in the modern game of football - buying foriegn!! It won't happend if you train up your local lads, look at the 1999 team of United, they are the most loyal bunch and they fans of United for life. Beckham was only sold against his will. Look at the prats like Ronaldo and Adebayor and the other non local lads, they are here just for the money, shame on the EPL. Should put a cap on the foriegn players in the starting 11, that would solve the problem and the England team would not suffer the embarrasment again."

"sell him, get some players who actually know they want to play for united. but only sell him once madrid make a respectable bid and stop pissing about. "

toonfan66 (Newcastle United fan)

"just sell him! get the money and get rid of some of the glazers huge debt. Man U are probably the strongest team in the world at the moment and ronaldo is probably the best player in world but his dream is playing for real madrid i think he should be allowed to be sold. He's annoyed a lot of fans and probably lost some of his fans. SELL HIM."
